my tears ricochet

This solo was the closest thing to myself I have ever put on stage. From the moment I heard this song, I knew it was going to be my senior solo. It was a song I listened to during one of the lowest points in my life, which is why it always meant so much to me.

When Meggan and I first created this piece, I thought I wanted it to tell a story about pain from my past. But as I kept performing it, we realized it had become something much more personal. Throughout my seven years at Elevated Dance Project, I always imagined my senior year differently. Instead, it became one of the hardest years I’ve had.

The paper in my solo represents everything I thought this year would be. As the dance continues, the emotions build from hurt, to frustration, to anger, until I finally rip the paper and let it all go. Once we made that shift, the solo finally felt complete.
This year, my goal stopped being about scores or trophies. I just wanted people to feel something through my movement, and to walk off stage proud of myself and how far I have come. I feel like I accomplished that.

I also want to give the biggest thank you to @l8tersbaby for being my coach and teacher since sophomore year and not only that but becoming a friend. Thank you for believing in me, pushing me to grow, seeing my hard work when I felt invisible, and helping me create a piece that truly felt like me. I love you with all my heart and I couldn’t have done ANY of this without you.

And thank you to everyone, including my family and friends and @elevateddanceproject who supported me throughout this journey.
This solo started as a story about pain, and it stayed that way through every performance. But it also taught me how to accept it, and how to let go. by @brynnbentz
