Would you believe that just three days after these photos were taken, my mom @janlee40 collapsed at work and had to be life-flighted from Wilson Medical Center to Duke University Hospital?

September 30th is a day our family will never forget. My mom suffered a Type A Aortic Dissection—her aorta ruptured from top to bottom. Thanks to the quick action and diligence of the team at Wilson Medical Center, testing was rushed and they ultimately saved her life. She was immediately transported to Duke, where Dr. Vickstein and his incredible team performed a six-hour emergency surgery to repair her aorta.

Because of the severity of the dissection, her chest had to remain open for two days before it could safely be closed. From there, she began the long, difficult process of waking up. She spent two weeks in the ICU, moving between the ICU and step-down unit, and underwent a pericardial window procedure during that time. Just as she began to make progress, she suddenly deteriorated and returned to the ICU with significant abdominal bleeding. She was rushed into emergency surgery again, where the team at Duke stopped the bleeding and coiled multiple abdominal aneurysms.

Miraculously, after three weeks of dialysis, her kidneys are now functioning at 100%—along with all of her other major organs. This is a true testament to the incredible health she had going into this crisis, and the strength she continues to show every day.

My family and I cannot say thank you enough to every doctor, nurse, PT, OT, and staff member at Duke who played a role in saving her life and supporting her recovery. After 43 days at Duke, my mom is now in in-patient rehab, fighting her way back with her usual determination and grace. by @brysonglee
