The Traditionalist

I never knew much about proper photoshoot wardrobe, definitely don’t have my own stylist (yet) and I don’t have my finger on the pulse of the latest fashions.

But what I have been told is this: “You can never go wrong with a turtleneck”

Well…challenge accepted.

Because my bald head was the exact color scheme of the turtleneck and Tom and Stephanie hooked me up with a matching backdrop, I think I achieved the goal.

The Father

At my highest paying tech jobs, I thought I had it made. Tireless hours of work would pay for everything my family needed. The cost, these grinds continuously sapped my time, energy and self worth.

Each day I sacrificed sharing the moments that mattered with my family, trading them in for more expensive possessions and schooling. The only passionate moments that they saw from me were through frustrations and scrambling to meet a deadline. As a father I need to leave more than only money and unfinished memories.

I used to think being a father was only providing monetarily. Providing food, shelter, the basic needs for survival. As I lived life it took on a new definition, I have to raise responsible and contributing members of this society that flourish as they understand success, respect dignity and prize empathy.

As creation is my main job now, I get to tap into the creativity and imagination alongside my children, living through example. We get to share their triumphs and work through their challenges on a daily basis. I get to be active rather than only observational.

I get to be.

The Actor

Did you always want to be an actor?

That’s a question often asked to me in this business.

Ironically, school taught me not to create. I recall at least three occasions on which teachers told me that my submitted papers were not my own creations. They decided that I was not capable of writing the poetry, prose and stories that I chose to share with them.

With no proof of plagiarism it was only conjecture based on a prejudice.

Perhaps their failure to appreciate my abilities was strong enough for me to suffocate my own thoughts.

Eventually, my stream of consciousness became a threat.

Sadly, a few years later, I met an educator who did recognize me and attempt to foster my gift by having it published.

I did not support this endeavor.

Acting offers me a safe way to imagine and express once again.

Always be polite, especially when visiting a house for the first time. Auntie was dressed like a doctor, surgical mask and gloves. She held his little sister with one arm and stirred a stove-top pot with the other. Was that acrid ammonia odor in the kitchen coming from inside the pot?

Freshman year of high school, I started running with a gang because they thought my likeness favored their leader’s. The initiation meant being jumped in, a savage beating from the entire gang’s membership. Each member then took drags from a lit cigarette pressed against the flesh of my wrist. The first to withstand both rituals without falling, quite the consolation.

I joined because I needed to belong, somewhere. I discovered that most of these kids were lost, possibly worse off than me.

Imagine awakening, disoriented in the post-op room surrounded by the night’s darkness. You repeatedly scream for Mom. A stranger arrives after what feels like hours. It is the night shift nurse, but by now you are inconsolable, the emotional state of a toddler. She has no choice but to sedate you until your parents arrive.

The next morning you awaken to sunlight. Was it just a nightmare? You are now just lucid enough to recognize the newly formed scabs. Remnants of the screw lacerations that have formed due to skull clamps that were placed on either side of your head. It doesn’t matter, you can finally go back home.

You again call for Mom, this time she appears. You spring out of bed, unexpectedly crashing to the ground, a combination of atrophy and nerve damage.

Fast forward, to the physical and occupational therapy rehab hospital where you call your home for the next three months. Most nights, enveloped by the terror of the blood curdling cries of the other young kids living through PTSD of limb paralysis caused by diving incidents, car accidents or other spinal injuries. Eventually this becomes the sounds of the streets that you learn to sleep through.

This next installment of photographs were an idea of Stephanie’s, I didn’t really understand the connection of her artwork with my story until I really studied these pictures. Therein lies the beauty of art, each interpretation is different, leading to multiple applications.

They call me JelloMan…

Well they called me that, I never asked for it, heck the only problem with the name was that I let it define me. Too many years were spent trying not to be ashamed…

More than 30 years ago I was in a life or death situation with a tumor in my brain. 13 year olds are not equipped to make this kind of decision.

This is the ultimate reason for the latest of my headshots, dare I say art installation. Stephanie was part of the inspiration for this idea that originated at the start of my acting career which began ~four years ago. Her artistic style helped me to realize that art can be an expression of one’s true self including my own.
