Ten years of Be Nothing. 🖤

Ten songs, ten little pieces of a record that still feels just as special all these years later.

It’s been lovely going back through each of them — the words, the memories, the old photos, and everything this album has carried with it since 2016.

Some records belong to a particular moment in your life. Others somehow grow up alongside you.

I think Be Nothing. is one of those.

Happy 10 years.
Here’s to everything it was, everything it became, and all the memories still attached to it.

10 — FOSSA 🖤

And then there was Fossa.

The last song on Be Nothing., and the one that has always felt like the right place for everything on this record to finally settle.

After all the guilt, anger, helplessness, fear and growing pains that run through these ten songs, Fossa feels huge and vulnerable at the same time. Not necessarily an answer to everything that came before it — just somewhere to leave it.

There’s something especially emotional about listening to it now knowing how young they were when they made this record, and hearing Henry talk about rediscovering just how vulnerable those lyrics were.

They couldn’t have known exactly what Be Nothing. was going to become. They were making their first full-length record and, in Dan’s words, hoping they were creating something that would still hold up ten years later.

Well.

Here we are.

Ten songs. Ten years. So many places, shows, memories and people that somehow became attached to them along the way.

Happy 10 years of Be Nothing.

09 — STOP TRYING, BE NOTHING. 🖤

And here it is: the phrase that gave the whole record its name.

What I love most is that Be Nothing. was never really supposed to mean giving up.

Henry described the record as coming from apathy and nihilism, but with a strange little twist: if nothing matters, then do something.

I think that makes the title so much more beautiful.

Stop Trying, Be Nothing. can sound defeated at first, but there’s something freeing buried underneath it too — letting go of what you’re supposed to be, what other people expect you to become, and finding out what happens when you just exist and make something anyway.

And look what came from it.

Ten years later, Be Nothing. became anything but nothing.

08 — THIS SONG IS DEDICATED TO NOBODY 🖤

I’ve always loved that this song is literally dedicated to nobody.

There’s something very Be Nothing. about that — pouring all this frustration, disconnection and emotion into something without needing to neatly attach it to one person.

It feels like having too much going on inside your head and nowhere particularly useful to put any of it.

And maybe that’s part of why this record has stayed with so many of us. These songs never needed to have lived our exact lives to somehow end up attached to our own memories.

Ten years of a song dedicated to nobody that somehow became somebody’s song anyway.

07 — FORGET ME NOT 🖤

There’s such a quiet sadness sitting underneath Forget Me Not.

A song about memory, losing pieces of someone and that frightening idea that a person can still physically be there while parts of who they were slowly become harder to reach.

Even the title feels like a tiny plea: please remember me.

And hearing it now, especially in the context of a record Henry has looked back on as incredibly vulnerable, makes it feel even more tender.

Ten years later, this is still one of those songs that makes me want to hold it a little closer rather than explain it too much.

06 — KILL YOUR CONSCIENCE 🖤

There’s so much guilt running through Be Nothing., and Kill Your Conscience feels like one of the places where that really comes to the surface.

That horrible little battle between what you feel, what you know and what you wish you could simply stop caring about.

I love how uncomfortable this song is willing to be. There’s no pretending that people always make sense or do the right thing — sometimes you know better and still find yourself fighting your own conscience anyway.

Ten years later, the honesty of these lyrics is probably what I appreciate most.

Messy, anxious, human.

05 — BROKEN GLASS 🖤

This one becomes so much heavier when you know where it came from.

Henry has spoken about writing Broken Glass about a friend who nearly died in a car crash. Suddenly all that fear, helplessness and desperation in the song has a very real person behind it.

There’s something incredibly vulnerable about trying to process the possibility of losing someone through a song — especially when you’re that young and probably don’t have the words for everything you’re feeling yet.

Maybe that’s why Broken Glass still feels so raw ten years later.

Some songs preserve a moment forever. I think this is one of them.

04 — CU 🖤

I think one of my favourite things about Be Nothing. is how young it sounds emotionally — and I mean that with so much affection.

Cu has that messy intensity of feeling everything at once: frustration, attachment, anger, wanting closeness and wanting to pull away from it at the exact same time.

There’s no neat little resolution to those feelings. They just exist, loudly and honestly.

And maybe that’s why these songs still connect ten years later. You grow up, your life changes completely, but somehow you can still recognise the person who once felt things this way.

03 — LAIKA 🖤

There’s always been something particularly heartbreaking about Laika.

Even the name carries this image of being sent somewhere completely alone, and the song has that same feeling of isolation running through it — guilt, mistakes, needing someone and not quite knowing how to reach them.

It’s vulnerable without trying to make that vulnerability pretty, and I think that’s part of what makes the early Boston Manor songs feel so special.

Listening to it ten years later, it still has that strange ability to feel enormous and incredibly lonely at the same time.

Some songs just never stop hurting in the best possible way.

02 — LEAD FEET 🖤

Lead Feet hits differently once you know the story behind it.

Henry wrote it about someone he went to school with who suddenly disappeared from his life. Years later, that person called him again and told him everything that had happened in the time between — two lives that had once been heading in the same direction, suddenly taking completely different paths.

And somehow that makes the nostalgia in this song feel even heavier.

I also love knowing that this was one of the first demos they made for Be Nothing., and that the bridge reaches all the way back to lyrics from Here/Now. A tiny piece of where Boston Manor started, hidden inside the record that would change so much for them.

Ten years later, that feels pretty special.
