There is a group of badass women who are single handedly taking down the #petrochemical industry in #canceralley. Pictured here are Joy and Jo Banner sitting on the porch of a slave quarters on the #whitneyplantation in which relatives of the two sisters were enslaved. In the second photo Joy Banner holds a sugar cane leaf and describes the introduction of sugar production in the south which had a massive impact on both free and enslaved people. These are outtakes from a @nytimes story published a few months ago.

The Banner sisters started @thedescendantsproject to advocate for black communities in the river parishes and to ensure their health and legacies are acknowledged and fought for as large petrochemical corporations continue to work to erase and ignore these folks and their heritage. Along with the Lavigne family @risestjames (pictured in a previous post) these women have had some huge wins blocking the #formosaplastics plant and the #wallacegrain elevator. taken in Cancer Alley by @btarnowski

As the Great Salt Lake Dries Up, Utah Faces An ‘Environmental Nuclear Bomb’ for @nytimes . I’ll be sharing a series of posts of images published and a bunch of outtakes for this story over the next week or two or three. Link to the story is in my bio. Reporting by Chris Flavelle.

1. Views from Antelope Island State Park show the striking lack of water in the Great Salt Lake. Antelope Island is no longer an island and now a peninsula as water levels have dropped exposing dry lake bed.

2. A large piece of exposed lake bed seen in the northern part of the lake near a popular spot, referred to as the ‘spiral jetty’, where people enjoy the sunset.

3. Fossilized bacteria form a favorite habitat for the brine shrimp that live in the Great Salt Lake and are the primary food source for many of the migratory birds that flock to the lake every year. However, these fossilized forms are supposed to be underwater and when exposed due to receding water levels the shrimp die and the habitats and birds disappear.

4. A dead bird found on exposed lake bed seen in the northern part of the lake.

5. A marina now sits empty and dry at Antelope Island State Park. A recent rain left puddles of water in the dry lake bed.

6. The Great Saltair, a concert venue and event space, which was once waterfront property shows the striking lack of water in the Great Salt Lake.

Thank you to @mcmarbled for a dream assignment and the amazing support and edit both online and in print.

Mapping America’s Largest ‘Dead Zone’ for @nytimes. Link in bio.

“On a sweltering night in late July, a team of scientists gathered onboard the R.V. Pelican in Houma, La., a 116-foot blue-and-white vessel resting in a bed of water hyacinths under a stormy sunset. As the clock ticked toward their midnight castoff, the scientists raced to set up the last of their equipment in the ship’s small laboratories. For the next week, they would be working 24-hour days in tight quarters to measure what little oxygen was left in the Gulf of Mexico’s infamous dead zone.”

“The dead zone results from excess nutrients, mostly from fertilizers, running off farmland into the Mississippi River and finally into the Gulf. The size of the oxygen-starved zone changes every year, growing as more nutrients make their way into the Gulf and shrinking when tropical storms or strong currents mix the water.”

Reporting by Kate Callaway. Thanks @mcmarbled by @btarnowski
