My eight-year-old already has our Japan itinerary figured out. 😂

Sushi. Cheesy corn dogs. Tokyo Disney. Universal Studios. Godzilla Store. And Mario Karts through the streets.

I cannot book that trip today.

What I can do is begin building something that could help make experiences like that possible for our family.

So this week, I’m documenting the ordinary work behind one very big goal.

Trying to film for Reels and YouTube used to leave me with three choices:

Film everything twice.

Crop it later and hope the important part survives.

Or choose which platform gets the good footage. 😂

DuoShot lets me record the same moment vertically and horizontally, then saves both versions as separate files.

I paid around seven dollars for it as a one-time purchase, and it has become one of the most useful little investments in my content creation process.

It does not replace planning, filming or editing.

It simply means I do not have to perform the same action twice for two different aspect ratios.

And as someone trying to create both short-form and long-form content, I will happily accept one less unnecessary step.

The internet loves a purity test.

If you use AI, defend everything about it.

If you question AI, delete every tool and never touch it again.

Neither position leaves much room for an honest conversation.

I am responsible for deciding how I use AI and what I publish with my name attached.

But individuals cannot solve an industry-wide problem through personal behavior alone.

We also need companies to disclose the resources they use, explain how their systems work and accept responsibility for the communities and people affected by them.

And we need rules that still apply when doing the responsible thing becomes less profitable.

Using AI does not cancel my right to ask questions about it.

If anything, using it gives me more reason to understand what makes that convenience possible.

I could have created an entire post about a lawsuit I could not verify.

Not because the original concern was fake.

Erin Brockovich is raising questions about AI data centers, water use and what surrounding communities are being told.

But somewhere between reading the social post and remembering the case that made her famous, my brain turned a campaign into a lawsuit.

That difference matters.

“Advocating.”

“Investigating.”

“Launching an initiative.”

And “filing a lawsuit” do not describe the same action.

This reminded me that responsible research is not only about catching completely fabricated information.

Sometimes it is catching the assumption I quietly added to something that was mostly true.

The original story did not need my interpretation dressed up as a fact.

Part of the reason using AI feels taboo is because every use gets flattened into the same moral category.

But using AI to organize an outline is not the same as creating a fake person and presenting them as real.

And neither is the same as deliberately using synthetic content to deceive someone.

Assisted.
Synthetic.
Deceptive.

The tool matters.

But so do the intention, the disclosure and the effect on the audience.

The better question is not only whether AI was used.

It is whether the people watching were respected.

I don’t know exactly what BTBList will look like when 58 becomes 580 or 5,800.

But I know why I’m building it.
