Seekest thou the road to all that’s foul and fair…

A little art trade with @devforst who, as a man of literally two interests, requested the baddest witch of them all, Agatha Harkness from the MCU’s Agatha All Along and Wandavision.

Not content to do anything set in the modern era, I went with her 17th century outfit and gave her a little colonial folk horror treatment as she makes her way (seemingly) down the witches road. Who else saw Goody Harkness dancing in the woods with the devil? by @buccifolio

Petrichor, the Storm Drake

Coming it at the last minute for #smaugust with a character based on the dragons from ASOIAF/House of the Dragon.

Petrichor has a shy temperament. His coloring allows him to blend into the mossy cliff sides and deep leaf-strewn forests where he makes his home.

For this illustration, I wanted to go for a blend of Dragonology with some Jonathan Hunt and Alan Lee thrown in there as well. by @buccifolio

The Oneiros

In Ancient Greece, the Oneiroi were chthonic dream spirits. The Oneiroi could also be dispatched by the gods to relay messages or portents to mortals, as Zeus does with Agamemnon in The Iliad.

In The Odyssey, Penelope describes the Oneiroi passing through one of two gates as they emerge from the Underworld to dispatch their portents. The Oneiroi that pass through an ivory gate have deceitful messages that cannot be fulfilled. Those that pass through a horn gate are truthful dreams that need to be accomplished in a person’s waking hours. by @buccifolio

Circe, the terrible goddess who speaks in the tongues of men.

My entry for @singomusezine Volume III Across Wine Dark Seas. I decided to illustrate a scene from Book V of The Iliad where the goddess Aphrodite appears on the field of battle to save her demigod son Aeneas after the Achaean warrior Diomedes hurls a rock at him and damages his pelvis.

As it is believed the Trojan War would have taken place in the late Bronze Age, I leaned heavily on armor and fashion from that time. Aphrodite’s design was inspired by Mycenaean fashions as well as details from Cypriot votive figures of the time period. by @buccifolio

A Uranian Aphroditus for Valentine’s Day based off of the tale from Greek Mythology about the emergence of the goddess Aphrodite from the sea foam, whereupon she was born aloft on a giant scallop shell and carried to land. by @buccifolio

I’m working on a larger project and needed a little break. Luckily I came across a 19th century illustration of Andras, a demon and Great Marquis of Hell. The text Pseudomonarchia Daemonum calls him “the author of discords.”

Maybe it was the owl’s face, or perhaps the strange sensuality of the demon’s pose, but I felt compelled to draw him. Big shoutout to @wyrd_dude for providing reference for the pose and for generally being down for all of my strange ideas. Some texts describe the head of Andras as a raven, others a wood owl, but I drew him as a sooty owl at the request of my model. by @buccifolio

Artemis and Apollo slaying the Niobids.

In Greek Mythology, Niobe was a queen of Thebes and mother to anywhere between 12-14 children (sources vary). She boasted that she was superior in motherhood to the goddess Leto, who only had two children... The Olympians Artemis and Apollo.

The divine twins could not abide by such insult to their mother and struck down the children of Niobe one by one from on high with their arrows.

Niobe is depicted in the Archaic style in the border of the illustration, across from Leto, mourning the loss of her children as they are felled by the arrows of Artemis and Apollo. by @buccifolio
