making progress… oil on panel. this is a real place in Barcelona, but I’ve made the vegetation just a little more wild than it is in real life. Escalator in the jungle. Machines in the wild. still need to do a shadow layer and some grime and some highlights and some secondary glow… hit you get the idea… by @buckhouse

Work in progress? already done? terrible idea? hard to say. i was trying out different words to write on the Post-it note…clever words or interesting words or poignant words and all of them felt shallow and how can I describe this… weak minded, bad art, old territory, fake intellectual, stale bread, not quite conceptual not quite visceral and so I just left the post it blank so blank that it looked like a miniature Ellsworth Kelly with a weird trompe-l’œil shadow… and then driving later I just started talking to myself aloud, as if I were Leonard Cohen: “I used this Post-it to cover the hole I mistakenly made in the wall while using my guitar as a bow and arrow to fire a pencil regrettably close to your ear. I was trying to be charming, not dangerous or reckless, but was sickened to see your eyes widen, but your training kicked in, and you flicked it away without breaking your train of thought.” by @buckhouse

Oil on wood panel with video installation. On the left is a traditional oil painting, on panel. 18 in x 24 in. On the right the viewer sees a photographer’s optical loupe mounted on the wall. When the viewer looks into the loupe, a hidden video is revealed embedded in the wall. This video ia an animated AI-extension of the original oil painting that takes the viewer up the stairs. The location is Maryon Park, made famous by Antonioni’s Blow Up, a film that deals with the veracity of images, memory, the nature of perception, and the split between the subject and object. I’ve returned to the park all these years later to revisit the location, but this time with both old and new technology. by @buckhouse

Like the day-dream romantic who learns French on her lunch break and saves pennies for a trip to Paris, I have been quietly nurturing a fantasy of being able to create any idea I come up with. Paint any picture. Write any story. And code up digital ideas. I’ve made progress as a painter despite some occasional setbacks with my vision. I’ve found a rhythm as a writer that helps me swim through almost any water, no matter how calm or rough. But this last one—code up digital ideas—this is tricky. I spent 18 months learning python, and now I code up an agent every week or so that helps me with tasks.

But python is not enough. I looked over the shoulder of some of the actual engineers at my job and was stunned to see I didn’t recognize their code at all. It was half-HTML and half JS but smashed all together at the same time. It turns out it was React, that marvelous invention from the Facebook team that engineers love for its lego-brick flexibility of building components.

That was four days ago.

Today, I hit publish on a new version of my website that is 100% built in React. How did I learn to write in a language I couldn’t recognize in only four days? I used AI, sure, but that’s only part of the story. The bigger element was an approach to learning that scaffolds itself as you progress. I call it coding backwards. I wrote up how to do it on Medium.
