🎉 Bucky turned 5 last week… and celebrated with a 5-star stay at @parkhyattmelbourne 🏨🥂✨

His suite came with everything a pup could dream of:

a dog bed, plush toy, and welcome treat waiting just for him. We loved that our room was on the ground floor, right by the rear entry and exit, so we never had to pass through the busy lobby and could head straight out to Fitzroy Gardens for birthday walks. There was even a balcony potty station, the kindest staff, and a dog menu with raw options, perfect for our raw-fed boy.

As a German Shepherd, Bucky often gets left out of “dog-friendly” hotels because of weight limits so we feel extra lucky to have found a place that truly welcomes dogs of all sizes. A birthday fit for our king 🥰❤️ taken in Park Hyatt Melbourne by @buckydownunder

Not sure what version he’s updating to, but hopefully it comes with fewer attitude problems 😂

We first took Bucky to Tasmania 3 years ago for my 30th and did a full lap of the island together 🥹🐾

It’s still one of our favourite road trips we’ve ever done, but taking a dog across to Tassie definitely needed a bit more planning than a normal trip.

So I put everything we had to organise into one post, from the Spirit of Tasmania crossing, where Bucky stayed onboard, to the vet prep, parasite treatment and paperwork we needed before travelling ☺️

The ferry crosses Bass Strait from Geelong to Devonport, with the trip usually taking around 9 to 11 hours. You can take your own car onboard, which made doing a full Tassie road trip with Bucky so much easier.

We did an overnight sailing, so once we arrived in Devonport the next morning, we could pretty much start the road trip straight away.

Tip: check-in opens before departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before sailing, so I’d definitely arrive early, especially when travelling with a dog and a car.

We chose to have Bucky stay in our car rather than use the onboard kennel.

He stayed on his own bed with the window slightly cracked for ventilation, and we set up a 4G camera so we could check on him whenever we wanted.

Passengers aren’t allowed to access the vehicle deck during the sailing, so the camera gave us peace of mind while we slept in our passenger cabin.

DOGS CAN NOW STAY IN THE CABIN WITH YOU 🎉🐾

Spirit of Tasmania now has pet-friendly cabins, so your dog can stay with you during the crossing instead of being separated from you.

You can take them outside for toilet breaks in the designated pet area, but they’ll need to stay on lead or in a carrier when outside the cabin.

Pets still can’t enter the regular passenger lounges, restaurants or bars, so most of their time onboard will be spent with you in the cabin.

Bring their usual bed or blanket, food, bowls and anything that helps them settle.

Way better than how we had to travel with Bucky 3 years ago 🥹

Dogs entering Tasmania need treatment for hydatid tapeworm.

The treatment needs to contain praziquantel and be given within 14 days before entering Tasmania.

We got the paperwork from our vet and brought it with us.

“But dogs need a big backyard…”

Maybe.
Or maybe they just need a life bigger than the backyard. 🥹🐾

Bucky’s “backyard” has been beaches, forests, mountains, campsites, tiny cabins and more road trips than I can count.

A big yard is nice.
But walks, enrichment, training, adventures and actually spending time with your dog matter too.

And apparently… all of Australia is Bucky’s backyard now 😂

🐾 Dog-friendly glamping on Phillip Island, around 2 hours from Melbourne CBD!

We stayed in one of the pet-friendly Safari Tents at @parklaneholidayparks s Phillip Island basically camping without having to sacrifice the comfy stuff 😂 The tent sleeps up to 6 and has its own bathroom, kitchenette, heating/aircon, private BBQ and outdoor area. Big dogs are welcome too, just make sure you declare your dog when booking.

📍 Park Lane Phillip Island, Cowes
🚗 Around 140 km / 1 hr 45 min–2 hrs from Melbourne CBD
🏘️ 5 mins to Cowes
🦘 Around 3 mins to Phillip Island Wildlife Park (dogs can’t come inside, unfortunately 😅)
🏁 Around 8 mins to Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit
🐧 Around 13 mins to the Penguin Parade
🏖️ And you’re only a short drive from dog-friendly beaches around the island. Ventnor Beach even has an off-leash section all year round, while other beaches have seasonal restrictions, so always check the signs before letting them off.

Such an easy little weekend escape when you want to bring the dog without actually roughing it 😂🐾⛺️ taken in Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia by @buckydownunder

Melbourne dog parents, WE’RE SO BACK 😭☀️🐾

Daylight saving starts tomorrow which means longer afternoons, sunset walks, beach trips and after-work adventures are back. WOOHOOO.

And somewhere in Melbourne, every dog is celebrating because dinner is technically an hour earlier 😂

A little slice of Heathcote that looks like it belongs somewhere completely different 🧡

The pastel pink, orange and white formations here were exposed through gold-mining activity in the 1800s, creating one of the most unusual landscapes we’ve found in Victoria.

Dog-friendly, easy to stop by, and honestly even prettier in person.

Save this one for your next Heathcote trip 🐾

“The best dog park in Victoria?”

Couldn’t tell you 😂 We don’t really do dog parks.

We’d much rather find a quiet trail, an empty beach, a lookout or somewhere Bucky can just explore without the pressure of a heap of unfamiliar dogs around him.

Not every dog needs to be a dog-park dog to have a good life 🫶🏼🐾
