POSTS STORIES REELS

Today, I launched my new podcast @buddycheck_podcast. In some ways, it’s been a year in the making. And in some ways, two or five.

In November, I was on a hike in Tucson, listening to the first episode of @armchairexppod’s new show Yearbook. The thesis of the show is: what year of your life made you who you are. The first season is narrated by @chadsand and is all about his junior year of high school. I won’t ruin anything, but it’s a year that would leave a mark on anyone. At the end of the first episode, Chad is talking about wanting to break some habits he picked up in the fallout of that year and he says, “I think the only way I’m going to be able to do that is to actually tell the story of that year. Not the story I made up, not the story I believe in my head, but through the people who were there and the moments that happened. I need to go back to that year so I can get out of that year.”

When I heard that, I stopped in my tracks on the trail and said out loud: shit, I think that’s exactly what I’m trying to do.

If I may riff on this a little more, I was also re-reading chunks of @elizabeth_gilbert_writer’s book Big Magic at the time, which is all about her creative and writing process. And from her, I was thinking how there are two places I could go with that realization: one would be to say, damn, they already made a show with the same concept as me, now mine’s gonna be less cool/new/shiny/whatever. Which would be insane first of all because 1/100000th of the people who hear Yearbook will hear me. And second, they’re completely different stories. Chad’s is about a Black teenage boy in Maryland 20 years ago and mine’s about a white me in a truck west of the Mississippi three years ago.

So the far more enjoyable way to see it is as a delightful case of multiple discovery: two people in completely different places landing on the same human instinct to understand ourselves and to storytell.

I’m scared to tell these stories. I’m also excited. And really excited for you to hear the wisdom and insights from all the people I talked to. Thanks for being here. Xoxo, Fred 🤍 by @buddycheck_podcast

They both have PhDs in clinical psychology from the University of Colorado in Boulder, they see therapy patients through private practices - specializing in ADHD, and they are rock climbing partners. We talked about why it makes sense for people with ADHD to resonate with climbing, the way fear can present for people with ADHD, hyperfocus as a superpower in climbing, how they work with their ADHD patients, climbing as a microcosm for life, and much more.

The final episode of season 2 asks how people think about identifying with a diagnosis like adhd in different contexts. When is it a helpful framework? When does over pathologizing take away from an experience?

A story that never made it into an episode…

“We didn’t bring enough water, so when we were thirsty we just had dance parties instead.. because women have more fun.”

Not advice to follow in the backcountry but it does make for a good punchline 💅💁‍♀️

Is the climbing community perfect? Certainly not. Has it offered people who maybe felt wrong or other in certain spheres of life find a community of peers who didn’t make them feel that way at all? For fricken sure.
