<Ad> Part 2: Making the Perfect Käsknöpfle at an Alpine Hut in Vorarlberg

We continue our stories and the ‘Taste of Vorarlberg’ series with a scenic hike that comes with a very special reward at the end. After any long solo hike in Vorarlberg, nothing beats a generous serving of aromatic Käsknöpfle—cheese spaetzle, a hearty Austrian take on macaroni and cheese, topped with crispy onions.

While the dish is served in nearly every inn and restaurant across the region, one of the most unique places to enjoy it is the magical Breithorn Hut, nestled at the foot of the Breithorn (2,081m) at a lofty 1,652m in the heart of the beautiful Alpe Oberpartnom. The hut is an easy and scenic three-hour hike from the village of Alberschwende.

Managed by the wonderful Bickel family, the Breithorn Hut can accommodate up to 20 overnight guests. From its rustic dining room, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Breithorn and the sweeping Große Walsertal, all the way to the Swiss mountains (Säntis). Truly magical.

Next Monday, we continue our Taste of Vorarlberg series with a sunrise in the mountains—and the mother of all breakfasts!

BEST HOSTELS FOR NOMADS: EUROPE EDITION ( Save for later 🙏🏾)

My biggest struggle as a digital nomad since I started blogging back in 2009 was to find affordable NICE places to stay where I could sleep, work and meet people. Hotels were too expensive and coliving spaces were still not a thing. Luckily, I discovered some amazing hostels that not only gave me a roof over my head but gave me a safe space to work, build my business & access to an incredible community of locals , creatives and fellow travellers. Most importantly, these hostels were embedded in the community so you did not feel like you were in the typical nomad bubble. This is important for me, not just fibre optic WiFi and rooftop bars. Plus, the facilities are amazing. You can get your own private room. You can bunk if budgets don’t permit. Now, hostels have become the place to play, work and live. Most importantly, they are open to all people , from all backgrounds. Coliving spaces are cool too , don’t get me wrong but hostels are fun for nomads, remote workers

I’ve written a guide to some of the best hostels in Europe that cater to digital nomads- link in my IG bio.

So if you are a nomad that wants access to locals, creative space & feel the city, this list is for you-please bookmark this, save it, share it with friends. Thank you!

Sabrina is not easily impressed, trust me , but when it comes to eating in London , we both agree that London might be the greatest food city on earth - lots of choice plus incredible value , if you know where to eat.You can never go hungry here, whatever your budget.

I’ve been coming to London since the summer of 1984 and everytime I set foot, I’m gobsmacked. Both me & Sabrina love the energy here ( we had our 2nd ever date here, so it has a special place in our heart) , the vibrancy, London has such a great mix of cultures which is all reflected in the food you will eat here.

Here’s some tips of great value London eats

If are planning a trip to Phuket, then this 3 Days in Phuket itinerary could be perfect for you.

<Ad> With the help of the trip planning app, HipTraveler last year we had 3 wonderful days in Phuket, where we enjoyed to get the know island a bit more better and checked out some of the lesser known aspects of the island like the beautiful Old Town with its beautiful Sino-Portuguese architecture, got a chance to visit THE hotel that featured in the movie, ‘The Beach’ and explore some of the island’s rich gastronomy scene that included a visit to a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant that focuses on Southern Thai cuisine.

Plus, we had the opportunity to visit one of the rare responsible elephant sanctuary’s on the island that rescues female elephants , offering only observation and feeding and prohibits bathing or riding.

While visiting the beautiful Wat Chalong temple, with the help of the HipTraveler ‘AroundMe Discovery’ function we also discovered the the island’s only rum distillery where a French couple have fused French-Caribbean rum-making traditions with the local Thai heritage and agriculture.

Plus, after all these years of visiting Thailand, we finally experienced for the first time Thailand’s famous combat sport up close by visiting a Muay Thai boxing match.

The weather and heavy rains threatened to ruin our trip but even with the rain, we discovered so many cool things to do. So if you are looking for things to do in Phuket on a rainy day, this itinerary is perfect for you.

Comment ‘PHUKET’ and I will DM you the link to our HipTraveler 3 days in Phuket itinerary

Before we disappear offline for the next 72 hours for our 2nd Analog Weekend adventure, I wanted to share some more photos from our 1st Analog Weekend in Palermo.

On our 3rd and final day, we decided to spend a day by the beach and went to the town of Cefalù, just an hour train ride from Palermo. I decided to shoot with an Ilford 200 B/W film with my brand new Kodak Snaptic A1 Camera.

It was a lazy hazy summer day, the sky crystal clear and pale blue in contrast to the startling deep blue sea waters. From Palermo, you can access a number of beaches but our hearts were set on Cefalù, charmed by our 15 year old guidebook’s promise of old school glamour, beautiful Arab Norman architecture and beautiful beaches crowned by spectacular cliffs.

Reality vs perception: I don’t know why it surprised us but, being June, a Sunday too, the town and beach was rammed. I developed this method a decade ago when visiting Venice: wherever the tourists go, walk the opposite way. Soon we were walking the old city walls with hardly any tourists in sight and suddenly a hole appeared in the walls and a magical stone staircase. Our curiosity led us down the staircase and down to the wash pools, where the sound of water crashing against the rocks created this unworldly feeling. We sat there in silence, enjoying the sound of waves until a sprightly elder gent joined us, hopping from rock to rock like a lizard, free from any gravitational pull.

His name was Salvatore. He came here every day for a dip in the sea , taking a break from running his busy, popular cafe. His English was fantastic with a slight Brummie twang which he picked up from his 15 years of driving buses in the Midlands.

It was a wonderful wee encounter (you will see a picture of us together, me donning his Panama hat gloriously). We might not have visited the wash pools or met Salvatore, if we’d had our phone.

The road less taken is often the hardest at first but comes with rewards for those that are brave. Here’s to our and your next Analog Weekend adventure. Where will the road takes us this time? See you in a few days :)

With a museum dedicated to the Hoff, their very own microbrewery in the basement, and the mother of all breakfast buffets till 11am - Circus Hostel is a hostel like no other in the world.

📍 Prime location at Rosenthaler Platz. 15 minutes from Alexanderplatz, Prenzlauer Berg up the hill, and the uber hip St Oberholtz cafe and Mein Haus Am See bar right across the street.

🛌 Great range of rooms - from spacious, good value dorms (4-bed ensuite up to 10-bed) to private ensuite rooms and top floor apartments with a balcony. Each dorm bed includes a reading light, USB charging, locker, and of course a picture of the Hoff wishing everyone sweet dreams.

📺 Rent the Panorama Studio Apartment for stunning panoramic views of Mitte and the TV Tower, or The Big Top if you’re travelling in a bigger group - hosts up to 7 guests.

☕️ 🍽️ Onsite bar and café, Rosie’s, does a great selection of cakes, great coffee, and the excellent €10.90 all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast, served 8-11am. Plus their own bar where they brew their own beer - pop quizzes, happy hour, karaoke nights, club culture talks, DJ nights.

👍🏽 Staff are friendly, knowledgable and v.helpful. Not strictly a party hostel, but a nice communal vibe and social atmosphere.

💪🏻 Free walking tours, bike rental, and gym discounts at EVO Fitness across the street.

This place is so much more than just a bed for the night. The world definitely needs more hostels like Circus.

Looking for a great , affordable coliving experience in Europe?

I have the perfect place for you!

In June I had the pleasure of finally visiting Palermo and Sicily, thanks to my Analog Weekends project. As part of it, we spent a week at the @beetcommunity coliving space in Palermo. Run by a warm, charismatic trio, Marco, Mario, Ambra, Anna and Marco’s mum, it has to go down as one of my most memorable experiences in recent memory.

It was, to quote a recent guest, “the perfect mix of productivity, community and peace.”

Both properties were beautiful but very different from each other.

Via Agrigento had the most beautiful outdoor garden, filled with flowers (jasmine, right outside our door), trees and birdsong. The kind of place where you want to open your diary, journal, reflect or write. And if you need to work, there’s a coworking space right on the property, open 24 hours. Via Lincoln was more in the heart of the city, but had a private outdoor garden that felt like an oasis of calm.

Another big plus was the kitchen: well stocked with spices, all the basic ingredients and proper pots and pans.Just like the best hostels, Beet plugs you into the DNA of a city and Sicily. Their famous Pot Luck dinner takes place in the Botanical Garden every Thursday, and it’s a great mix of guests and local residents. We met so many nice people there: fellow nomads, a local bus driver who comes to practise his English, a yoga teacher who’d just relocated to the city and was looking to make friends. The dinner is free, as are many of their other experiences, like the sunset hike to nearby Monte Pellegrino. They also run day trips to explore different parts of the island, all trips priced very well.

Beet Community was a great place to experience the magic of Palermo and Sicily. It felt like being hosted in someone’s home, and it changed my perspective on coliving spaces for the better.

Coliving experiences at Beet Community start from €900 a month- longer you stay, the better the rates! Plus, keep me in mind, they will be hosting another edition of the Italia Nomad Fest which will take place from the 6-14th March, 2027. There is 50% off early bird ticket taken in BeetCommunity by @budgettraveller

Heading to Göteborg, Brussels, Düsseldorf or Vienna this summer?

Do you have a Cineville card?

If you travel through movies like I do, add an extra layer to your Eurotrip by discovering one (or more) of their 250 affiliated cinemas across 92 cities in Europe.

Last summer we made our own mini Eurotrip through Vienna and Berlin. Highlights below.

**1. Kino Kulturhaus, Vienna**

We kicked off with Lost in Translation (so good on the big screen) at Kino Kulturhaus — a heritage-listed auditorium dating to 1893, converted into a theatre in 1924. Wood panelling, red interiors, one of Vienna’s most beautiful cinemas. There’s a great bar and a shop stocked with films and film books.

It’s in the inner city too, round the corner from the Vienna State Opera and Stephansdom, so before or after you can swing by Kleines Café , immortalised in Before Sunrise. Maybe you’ll meet the modern day Jesse and Celine on their own Eurotrip 🙂

**2. Actors Studio, Vienna**

An old school Viennese cinema mixing independent and modern films. Cosy, intimate, and the perfect setting for Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme. The popcorn (salted) was good too.

**3. Hackesche Höfe Kino, Berlin**

We ended in Berlin at one of the city’s best-loved arthouse cinemas. It sits inside the Hackesche Höfe complex — an Art Nouveau courtyard cluster of independent shops, also home to the historic Chameleon Theatre.

You’ve still got ONE month to plan your own Cineville Eurotrip. If you live in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium or Sweden, it’s definitely worth signing up.

Membership starts from €19 a month (depends on age and location) — good value next to what we spend on streaming subscriptions.

Just arrive a bit early, show your membership (digital card while you wait for the physical one), and collect your tickets. Easy. taken in Vienna, Austria by @budgettraveller

There is the Berlin summer, the Paris summer, but over the last few years, thanks to v.kind friends , we have had the good fortune of being acquainted with the joys of a Viennese summer, and it is just …pure magic.

Parts of the city feel abandoned, with a big chunk of locals escaping to the Austrian Alps, or Italy or Greece, for their vacation. Many bars close down. The city moves at a slower, languid pace. The heat can be oppressive (especially with a crazy heatwave coming up), but luckily Vienna has so many cool outdoor spots to escape the heat. From outdoor swimming pools (historic outdoor pools in the Vienna Woods, to pools with the best view of the city and a 102-metre slide at Schafberg, to outdoor pools by the Danube) to open-air concerts, free outdoor cinema, drinks and late-night dancing by the Danube Canal, to hiking through the city’s many Wanderwege trails and losing yourself in complete wilderness within the city’s perimeter — there is so much joy in living here. My favourite thing to do in Vienna is just wander through its streets aimlessly. It is a city with so many layers and reminds me a lot of Edinburgh, where even after repeated walks, you discover new nuggets of history and great stories.

So here is your sign. I’m planting the seed in your head. Once in your life, you should definitely visit Vienna in the summer…. Just don’t visit next weekend! 🤣

<Ad> There are some cities you visit, and then there are some that invite you to linger, places where you ‘live’, feel the everyday pulse of life and get an all areas access pass to local life.

That is the magic of Timișoara in a nutshell. A month, documenting life as a digital nomad flew by, which I guess is a good sign of how much we enjoyed our time here, immersing ourselves in the local fabric of life.

It was an emotional moment saying goodbye yesterday morning as we hopped on the IC378 train to Budapest at 6.20am.

I won’t go into all the details yet, but I will say this: our major highlight was definitely the warm, friendly and inspiring locals we met from all walks of life during our month there, from Uber drivers to people at the local fruit and vegetable market, to people from the startup scene and those trying to make a difference to the city by investing in its local tech and culture scene.

Locals are initially reserved, but once you break the ice and introduce yourself, people really open up and are warm, generous with their time & sharing their city.

We definitely see ourselves going back, catching up with some newfound friends and building some more roots in this city.

We have a whole bunch of exciting content to share with you from the trip: insights into nomad life like the cost of everyday essentials, the range of places you can stay, a look into the coworking scene, and some inspiration for stuff you can enjoy in the city. Stay tuned!
