THE DROP OFF (2021) Red. Love. Desire. Sacred. Sacrificial. Danger.

We played with the color red in Camille and Tommy’s safe space as a reminder of the love they once had for one another and as a precursor for what’s yet to come. Our production designer @juliaxvela even hand painted a full size mural full of metaphorical blossoms. If you look closely enough you can see the profile of a face in the yellow flowers.

We also wanted the composition to feel intimate from every corner which is why we had Tommy playfully come into frame upside down. Tommy was Camille’s Heaven, and she his grounding earth angel. It’s a striking contract going from intimate framing to the extreme wides of the desert we also shot, which further served the narrative of being world’s apart.

These were some of our favorite scenes to shoot. You could really feel the love and connection between the two characters in a beautifully articulated set and within a composition where love is felt from every inch of the frame. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) The bathroom scene, the haute toilette is what we referred to it as. A pivotal moment where we see the shift from love found to love lacking trust in Camille and Tommy’s relationship. In these shots of Tommy, we wanted it to be colorless, lifeless, just a reflection of what was. We wanted Tommy to feel like he was a statue, someone who was getting stonewalled, someone washing in old bath water. We wanted it to feel like cold, cloudy, like a storm was coming, the storm that inevitably leads to their demise. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) Mirrors were a big influence on this scene. Who we see in the mirror is not always an accurate representation of who we really are. We installed a trifold mirror so that we could see the many versions of Camille in a single frame.

In this scene, Camille is having a conversation with herself and casually forgets Tommy is in the bathroom with her. She is entranced by the her own ego, the very thing that she must sacrifice before she can become fully self aware and be truly present for her family. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) Ritualistic masks, grey stone-like features for Tommy and not so skin-deep coloring for Camille. We wanted Tommy to feel cold and colorless, while dousing Camille in pinks with a hint of uncomfortable greens. Both characters are wearing their own version of a mask, both lack authenticity at this point in their relationship. by @buffalo_milk

From land bands out in the desert to human landscapes in the bedroom, mountains and valleys inspired us in many ways. Even the connecting, the twisting and intertwining of the two bodies was purposefully planned out.

We decided on painting the walls blue for it to feel like the sky and used yellow sheets to mimic the golden grasses of the California desert. Even the knitted pillow was selected for its texture to embody fluffy white clouds.

We wanted it to feel like Camille and Tommy were one unit, that they represented the journey through the desert mountains and valleys, and that at one time, they were deeply in love. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) The bedroom. The sanctuary. The place where Camille and Tommy could spend hours, even days together. The place where love was found.

For the production design, we dried out flowers for almost a year and turned it into a gothic style cathedral arch over the bed. Julia also hand painted a beautiful mural symbolizing the main characters’ garden of abundance love. They both created unique rave and after party fliers to hone in the characters love for dancing the night away. The color red was used as a double entendre, a relationship full of love and the warning of what was to come later. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) We used many insert shots in this film to help develop the world and close ups on hands were a big part of it. Human touch and the lack there of, energy transferring from one person to the other and the breaking of the human connection. Here we have La Bandida and Le Fleur du Mal on the top frame connected, Camille and Tommy in the bottom connected and the receding electrical current in the middle. Found love vs love lost. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) New skill set unlocked for @chelseachristeeny. PIXEL WHIP. Our character Camille does a light show for Tommy and he becomes entranced. One of the most fun props we have shot with to date. If you haven’t seen one in action, YouTube it. So fun and so mesmerizing. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) Our main characters represent a one night chance at love that turned into a longer relationship, one that should have never been. Camille and Tommy met at a “call the hot line, follow the orange cones” desert rave and instantly fell in love. The drum and bass thumping, the starry night sky shape shifting and the wildness of colorful living all added to what eventually became their downfall.

For these shots we played with animation, intense coloring and wild costumes to really hone in on what it feels like to be in love while emotions are heightened. Love on drugs. It’s psychedelic. by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) it’s Saturday! Time to blow off neon gun powder.

Here we have Tommy played by @claytonfroning as his alter ego Le Fleur Du Mal. In this world, we believe everyone harnesses a little good and a little evil.

THE DROP OFF (2021) our main characters have alter egos. One of Camille’s is La Bandida. The lone cowboy, the drifter, the one who must face her reality and finally make a choice on which direction to go. When we are first introduced to La Bandida, we wanted to play with flashing neon lights and cued the animation.

In terms of costume we put her in all black, not as a sign of death, but as a sign of life. When a computer pixel dies, it goes white, here we wanted her in the desert algorithm full of life. We also used a family heirloom; glasses from the 1800s! by @buffalo_milk

THE DROP OFF (2021) Insert shots of nature out in the desert. Lizards, poppies and fire ants were always in sight, well, hardly any poppies that time of year, but lots of lizards and bugs! We took some time to grab these moments where we could as they created a nice scene set up as we cut from the present to the past in the film. by @buffalo_milk
