Loud, Obnoxious, and Noisy.

In anticipation of some murky pike water locations coming up, I leaned into adding more flash than usual.
Over the years I’ve tended to dial flash back and keep things subtle, but that wasn’t the goal with these.

6” reverse bulkheads (my favorite Bob Popovic pattern) tied on Ahrex GBPR378 weedless 6/0 hooks. Bucktail and Ostrich,
a generous amount of Polar Flash in the tail, and Ripple Ice reverse‑tied into the head stacks. Add a 5mm rattle to add to the noise. by @bugbiteflytying

OK—this is another rabbit hole I went down, but a fun one, and there are a lot of pictures.

In Pop Fleyes, I noticed how much the Surf Candy resembles Gunnar Brammer’s silicone‑head Chosen One. What really stood out was how Bob creates a weed guard by cutting the silicone, pulling it upward, and trimming it to form a guard (see first photos).

That made me think of a tube jig. I wondered what would happen if I extended the silicone farther down the body of a Chosen One–style fly to give it more of a Surf Candy look and feel. The issue was that the silicone covered the hook point on the weedless hook, so I removed a section to create a slot that leaves the hook exposed.

Building on my recent adventures with using rubber legs on peanut‑style flies, I added rubber legs to extend past the bottom of the body to push it even closer to a tube jig wanna-be fly.
The question is: will it fish like a tube jig? Testing these in May up north in the shallows.

Squimpish hair, Strung Fuzz for the head (Chosen One platform) and rubber legs to extend the body. All tied on the Ahrex 1/0 GBPR378 Weedless Hook. by @bugbiteflytying

Once again, I was stoked to be asked by Thorne Bros. Fly Fishing to tie up some flies for their shop.

This batch is a dozen 7–8” reverse bulkheads on the Ahrex GBPR378 weedless hook. They’re kind of a mash‑up of Gunnar’s swim‑bait platform with some influence from Mr. Monaghan’s bucktail and synthetic stacking techniques. I finished them off with a few saddle feathers and a Strung Fuzz head and leaned pretty hard on Misfit Tinsel. It adds complexity and nice movement without too much noise from the flash. by @bugbiteflytying

Another rabbit hole.

Adapting the Nut Job platform by @brendanruch to @gunnar_brammer weedless swim bait platform. Same intention here to create weedless versions of these in search of shallow water-ish weedy predators.

The size of these is varied by hook size and related rear shank size

Thanks again to Josh @until_they_included_us for the continued inspiration and guidance on these. Love this platform and can’t wait to test it! by @bugbiteflytying

Adapting Russ Madin’s Peanut platform to Gunnar Brammer’s weedless swimbait platform.
The goal was to create something weedless and buggy to slither around the lily pads and drop into some holes in the weeds for largemouth.
Have always loved these flies and am forever inspired by the aforementioned.
Special thanks to @until_they_included_us for so much inspiration and guidance on materials and function as I dove into the rabbit hole.
Played with shank to hook size ratios to shoot for 4.5 – 5” flies. All weighted through wire or beads. Tied on the Ahrex GBPR378
weedless hooks

Last of the bassy-pike bulkheads for now. Played around with some blending and a little bit more deliberate use of purple wing n flash. Tied weedless on an Ahrex GBPR378 4/0 hook. And yes, that’s my fave color Tequila Sunrise blended into the head. by @bugbiteflytying

Semper Muskie/Pike Fleyes?

Inspired by many and especially having my nose in PopFleyes, I wanted to see if I could adapt this platform and a color scheme for some northern toothy critters. Backed up the heads with some home spun brushes of Craft Fur and Squimpish hair (saw JT do that on one his videos).

One on the Ahrex SA90 6/0 Beast Hook and of course, on the weedless Ahrex GBPR 378 6/0 Weedless Hook

Have some white feathers that may work for this…hmmm. by @bugbiteflytying

Have been playing in a different sandbox of recent (more to come on that) but returned to familiar territory. Tied up a classic Bob Popovic’s reverse bulkhead with some ostrich and Wing N Flash. Veiled the first stack of the head with Squimpish for the fade.
And yup, tied on a Ahrex 6/0 GBPR378 hook. Broke out my all-time fav color of Bucktail -Tequila Sunrise courtesy of @midwestbucktailsllc by @bugbiteflytying
