We met at the V-Kei Meet Up @vkeishoxxsd in San Diego, a coffee social for those inspired by Japanese Harajuku Visual Kei, Goth/JFashion, Alt fashion, etc. It was their first meetup, hosted by @rotten.ricecake @peachiikkuma @charlotte.like.the.spider and meeting at @manorcoffeebar. I’m looking forward to attending more of these!

Part of my street portrait project on Harajuku fashion.

“I was born and raised in San Diego and have lived here my entire life. I also have family just across the border in Mexico, so I spent a significant part of my childhood there as well.

“I went to school for cosmetology, I’m a licensed nail technician! I’ve always had a passion for art, anyone who knows me can tell you that I’m always working on a new project or creation. I hope to one day start my own salon and work with other people who share the same passions as me.

“I’ve been into visual kei for a little over a decade now. My favorite series growing up was the rose of versailles, so I actually discovered it through Lareine’s cover of “Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru”! What drew me most to the community was the fashion. I didn’t get to express myself freely growing up, so seeing the normalization of such amazing looks that weren’t defined by strict societal norms or gender was very important to me and my journey as a young transgender person. So many different amazing visual kei bands helped me to shape my relationship with gender in a way that I wish I could describe with words. To summarize: Life is too short, wear that dress!!!

“Now that I’m older, I feel much more confident dressing how I want! I grew up in a family of avid metal, rock, and punk fans, which played a big role in shaping my personal style. I love bold, dark, and moody styles and that reflects in a lot of my outfits and makeup. My everyday look leans more goth, but I draw inspiration from a variety of J-fashion styles, especially gothic lolita”

cosplayed sir integra this day, i was really happy with how my work turned out and very surprised with how many people recognized me! the hellsing meetup was so much fun and i got to meet so many nice people and catch up with some friends as well! i hope yall don’t mind me tagging you 🫣
