Asthma findings & why?
Bugsy had lung worm as a baby. She was probably eating snails to survive. She was only 5 weeks when I found her. We got her started with pet insurance at 8 weeks of age. @trupanion has been a Pilar in Bugsy's life. The lung worm infection was cleared and she was negative on her test but we knew that asthma was in her future. So we purchased an aerokat chamber & filled her script for her new inhaler.

Her calcium levels being elevated scared me to my core.

How can this be 💔I've done everything right. My mind started to race. Could this be cancer? We sent out a panel to confirm the calcium levels and also her vitamin D levels.

Those results came back today and confirmed that indeed her calcium was elevated. All those subtle vague signs she was giving me now add up.

As I waited to here the final diagnosis my heart cracked. The doctor said. Bugsy does NOT have cancer. 🐞❤️

She has idiopathic hypercalcemia.
Definition: IHC means high blood calcium with an unknown root cause, though it likely involves abnormal bone resorption, increased intestinal absorption, or reduced renal excretion.

The signs are vague guys....
The treatment is chia seeds in her food to help bind the calcium.

We have a recheck in 1 month to check her levels.

I cant stress the importance of routine labwork and yearly abdominal ultrasounds.

We will keep you updated as we teach Bugsy how to use her inhaler.

Bugsy got her first chia seeds dose this evening. She ate her dinner and had a churu.

Time for her heating pad and a whole lot of love ❤️

Bringing awareness to cats with idiopathic hypercalcemia. Let me start by saying that May of 2026 shortly after Bugsy birthday I noticed very vague symptoms after what we thought was back pain.

Symptoms so vague we would have missed them. But a mom always knows when something is off.

She slept more. Most people think hey this is normal for cats. No not for her. She is a very active cat. This was different. It was her getting tired after mild play and going off to her favorite spots and sleeping for hours.

Let's not forget the fall that led us to thinking she had back pain. Thank goodness I too her to the ER because we did bloodwork and when I look back her calcium was at 11 and the high end is 11.9 here was our baseline and time clock.

She was vomiting and regurgitating. Not excessive or concerning considering she vomited a hairball. Nothing seemed unusual there.

All the while something seemed off.

The reason I bought her in was because she was do for her annual bloodwork in September and I wanted to start incorporating abdominal ultrasounds.

We scheduled an appointment with a board certified internist and everything came back clear & normal except 1 thing. Her calcium. We sent a panel out to Michigan State University and it confirmed the elevation was real.

No cancer , kidney or thyroid as the issues hence the diagnosis of idiopathic hypercalcemia. No known reason for the elevation in calcium.

Now what?
Chia seeds for 1 month and repeat calcium check. Once back to normal the plan going forward will be.

Every 6 months:
Cbc/chem/T4/ UA and calcium checks
Chest radiographs and abdominal ultrasounds

We caught this with 4.5 months from vague symptoms this is extremely early which means organs were not compromised.
