I took a career break to take time to heal my body after surgery. I didn’t really feel like myself during the recovery. But now I’m realizing I’m not just going back to the pre-surgery/ pre-break me. Yes I gained so much free time, but I also gained the freedom to choose what I do and who I want to be!

Some reflections on career break so far! It’s easy to go back and apply for a corporate job because that’s the only way I know to do ‘career’. Taking time off is the harder, unknown thing! I’m also learning to embrace that mentality/ identity internally because it’s still hard to tw people about it so I’m starting here! by @buildwithamanda

Friendships in 30s look different from the 20s. It’s so hard to schedule even if we live in the same city. Grateful to be able to still travel with our friends nowadays.

I was traveling in Venice and met so many artists and people who genuinely love what they do or those who’ve dedicated years/ their whole lives to mastering the crafts & creating new styles. They work hard, make enough money for a living and live their lives. We met someone who makes customize handcrafted artwork and we think she can charge more but there’s a sense that once she’s made enough that’s okay. She emphasized on honest business, only getting the payment if the customer is satisfied. While I think we’re so used to a mindset of constant growth and make more and more and more. When is it enough?

If you’re in corporate, you’re in the best position to network for your career pivot. You can reach out to junior people in different functions/ departments to get coffee chats to learn about their jobs and how they get there. This helped me quickly eliminate roles that are not for me. Ask for an intro to someone else, this can lead to a project collaboration or an interview.

Here are the 5 signs: don’t just ignore them

1. You’re on the objectively most exciting project on your team and still feel nothing.

2. You look around at the people above you and don’t want any of their jobs.

3. You know exactly what you need to do to get promoted. You just don’t want to do it.

4. You’re good at it. But you no longer believe in the mission and catch yourself justifying why it matters to you.

5. The thought of doing this for 10 more years doesn’t just bore you. It fills you with dread.

This doesn’t really go away after a vacation.
