My leadership journey started when I was just 20 years old.
I ran a retail store, then progressed into managing multiple sites — almost like an area manager — and went on to work for some huge global brands.

On paper, I was successful.
But honestly? My leadership style was awful.

I was obsessed with outcomes, targets, and results…
and I completely missed the most important part — people.

Along the way, I experienced three line managers who were genuinely horrific.
Different companies, different roles — but the same impact.
Their leadership damaged my confidence, my wellbeing, and my mental health to the point where I had to resign.

That’s when I stopped and reflected.
And I realised something powerful.

All three managers had one thing in common:
they were insecure.
They didn’t know who they were as leaders — and that’s why they treated people the way they did.

That realisation changed everything for me.

I created the Managers Mentoring Programme because I never wanted anyone else to experience the pain I went through at work.
Leadership should build people — not break them.

You've hired your first employee. Congratulations! 🎉

But hiring someone is only the beginning.
One of the biggest transitions for a founder is going from managing a business to managing people.

And here's something I always remind founders:
Don't assume your employees know what you expect just because you've hired them.

There are three conversations you should be having from the very beginning:
1️⃣ Expectations – What does success look like in their role?
2️⃣ Feedback – How are they getting on, and what support do they need?
3️⃣ Development – What do they want to achieve, and how can you help them grow?
You don't need to wait until you have a team of 10 or 20 people to start putting good people management practices in place.

Start with your very first employee.

😂 I KNOW some founders are going to feel personally attacked by this one.

WhatsApp isn't the problem.

Using WhatsApp as your entire people-management system is.

The systems you used when there were 2–3 of you won't necessarily work when there are 10, 15 or 20.

Growth requires structure.

And your people processes need to grow alongside your business.

This is one of the most common situations I see with growing businesses.

The business has evolved.

The team has grown.😊📈

But the people processes are still operating like there are three people sitting around one table.

And that's normally when cracks start appearing.

My role isn't simply to give a founder a set of policies and disappear.

It's to understand the business, identify the gaps and help create people practices that actually work in the real world.
