🐾 Welcome to Bulah’s Dog Training 🐾
Hi, I’m Sofie – the human behind this page and the heart of Bulah’s Dog Training. 💛

This journey started with my girl, Bulah, who passed away a year ago. She was more than a dog – she was my best friend, my teacher, and the inspiration behind everything I do. This business is my way of keeping her legacy alive, one wagging tail at a time. 🐶✨

I’ve been working with dogs professionally for over 7 years, and my passion is helping dogs and their humans build better bonds through trust, communication, and training.

These days, I share life and adventures with Zee, my energetic and hilarious Springer Spaniel, who keeps me on my toes and reminds me every day why I love what I do.

Whether you’re here for tips, training, or just some good dog content. Let’s make training something you and your dog can enjoy – welcome. I’m so glad you’re here. Let’s do this for Bulah, and for every dog who deserves a second chance.🐕🤎

This is what epilepsy can look like in dogs…

And it’s not always what you expect.

Seizures don’t always mean collapsing and shaking.

They can look like:
– full body fits (what most people recognise)
– staring into space or “zoning out”
– confusion or disorientation
– head shaking or twitching
– sudden wobbliness or loss of balance
– pacing or restlessness
– clinginess or unusual behaviour
– being sick or drooling

These are all different ways seizures can present.

Some are obvious. Some are incredibly easy to miss.

That’s why awareness matters.

If your dog is having repeated episodes like this, don’t ignore it. Keep track and speak to your vet.

Epilepsy can be managed—but only if it’s recognised.

Save this so you know the signs

When a dog has a stressful or scary experience
- like barking at another dog or getting told off — their body floods with stress hormones like adrenaline.

That little shake-off you see afterwards? That’s their way of releasing that tension - kind of like us taking a deep breath r shaking out our hands after a tough moment.

It’s a natural reset for their nervous system.
They’re literally saying, ‘Phew, I’m okay now.’ So instead of worrying or stopping them, let them do it — it’s actually a really healthy sign they’re self-regulating.

Next time your dog shakes after something stressful, give them a bit of space and quiet — they’re just processing.

🩵 Edith’s cruciate journey — the beginning of a new chapter

Those who follow Bulah’s Dog Training will know how much my dogs mean to me, so I wanted to share a little update about Edith.

After weeks of intermittent lameness and discomfort in her back leg, today she was sedated for a thorough orthopaedic examination and X-rays.

And we now have our answer.

Edith has cruciate ligament damage. 💔

At just seven months old, this is obviously not the news we were hoping for. Today was especially difficult for me — handing her over for sedation, waiting for her to wake up and knowing that we may be starting a very different journey from the one I had imagined for her.

We don’t yet know exactly what treatment will be needed, and surgery may be part of her journey. But what we do know is that she has an amazing team around her. ❤️

James @hoppersvets have been incredible, and our wonderful physio @thephysiotherapyvetnurse has supported us throughout and will be a huge part of Edith’s rehabilitation.

As a dog trainer, I spend so much time talking about listening to our dogs, recognising changes, advocating for them and working alongside veterinary professionals. Experiencing it with your own dog is very different.

Our priority now is simple: getting Edith comfortable, strong, confident and properly rehabilitated, whatever that journey looks like.

There will be restrictions, patience, physio and probably LOTS of very boring lead walks. 😂

But we’ll take it one day at a time.

I’ll share our journey as we go — the difficult days, the progress and everything we learn along the way — in the hope it may help another dog or owner going through something similar.

We’ve got you, Edith. 🩵🐾

🚨 DOG OWNERS — PLEASE READ! 🐶🌑☀️

There’s a solar eclipse tonight, and I know lots of people will be heading outside to watch it!

⚠️ PLEASE DON’T TAKE YOUR DOG WITH YOU TO WATCH THE ECLIPSE.

Looking directly at the sun can cause serious and potentially permanent damage to the eyes — and this applies to our dogs too. 🐶👀

If your dog, cat or any other outdoor pet is outside during the eclipse, please be mindful and don’t allow them to stare towards the sun.

🐾 If possible, keep pets indoors during the peak viewing period, or supervise them closely outside.

👓 And PLEASE protect your own eyes too! Only look directly at the sun using proper, certified solar eclipse glasses. Normal sunglasses are NOT safe.

You wouldn’t knowingly put your dog’s eyes at risk — so please don’t take them along to watch the eclipse with you. ❤️

Enjoy the eclipse safely — leave the eclipse watching to us humans! 🌑✨

Training doesn’t just happen at home 🐾

Today we took Zylah and Edith into Pets Corner — somewhere they find very exciting with all the smells, toys and treats!

We practised something so important… being calm in a busy environment.

Sitting, settling and lying down when there are distractions around is a skill that takes time to build.

Remember, puppies don’t automatically know how to behave everywhere. A puppy who can settle at home may find a shop much harder — and that’s completely normal.

Take it slowly, keep expectations realistic, and reward the calm moments.

Training is about building confidence, trust and helping our dogs feel comfortable in the world 🤍

Happy Gotcha Day, Bulah. ❤️

As your gotcha day approaches, I’ve been looking back through photos and videos and thinking about just how much you changed my life.

When you came to me, you’d already experienced so much hardship. You had been let down by people, and although it was hard you somehow found a way to trust, to love, and to teach. Although our time together wasn’t nearly long enough, the lessons you gave me will stay with me forever.

You taught me patience, resilience, forgiveness, and unconditional love. You showed me that a difficult start in life doesn’t define who you are. No matter what you’ve been through, you can still be someone’s whole world. You can still bring joy, happiness, and unforgettable memories.

The person I am today is because of you.

You inspired my passion for dogs, my commitment to force-free training, and even the name of my business. Bulah’s Dog Training exists because of you. Every dog I help, every owner I support, and every success story I celebrate carries a little piece of your legacy with it.

When I lost you nearly two years ago, I wasn’t sure how I’d move forward. Then came Zylah, bringing light back into my life when I needed it most. And more recently, Edith joined our family, helping Zylah navigate her own challenges with epilepsy and bringing even more joy into our home.

No dog could ever replace you, but I like to think you had a hand in sending them my way.

So today, I celebrate you. Not with sadness, but with gratitude. Thank you for every lesson, every adventure, every cuddle, and every moment we shared.

Your story didn’t end when you left. It lives on through the dogs who followed you, the business that carries your name, and the countless lives you’ve touched through me.

Happy Gotcha Day, beautiful girl.

You are loved, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten. ❤️

Did you know that walks aren’t the only thing your dog needs?

Enrichment is just as important as physical exercise, especially for puppies. Activities like lick mats, snuffle mats, puzzle toys, searching for food, and other enrichment games give your dog’s brain a workout too.

Mental stimulation helps dogs learn to focus, build confidence, and can be incredibly calming and soothing. In fact, many dogs will be more settled after 15 minutes of enrichment than after a long walk.

The key is balance. Dogs need opportunities to move their bodies and use their brains. When we meet both needs, we often see happier, calmer, and more fulfilled dogs.

What enrichment activities does your dog love most? 🐾

Confidence starts with fun 🐾💦

Swimming is such a great way for puppies to build confidence, explore new experiences, and just enjoy being dogs 🐶✨ No pressure, no perfection — just happy pups having fun in the water.

First walks are never about perfection 🤍🐾
They’re about building confidence, exploring the world at the puppy’s pace, and making every new experience feel safe and positive.

Today we focused on sniffing, choice, curiosity and connection — because confident dogs are built through trust, not pressure ✨

Loose lead walking isn’t about control. 🐾

You don’t need to pop the lead, yank, or intimidate your puppy into walking nicely beside you. Real heel work comes from connection, trust, and teaching your dog that being with you is the best place to be. 💙

Train the relationship, not the restraint. ✨

Tug isn’t “making dogs dominant” 🙅‍♀️

When done properly, tug can:
✨ Build confidence
✨ Improve engagement
✨ Strengthen your relationship
✨ Teach impulse control

The important part is making sure both dogs are happy, relaxed and choosing to re-engage in the game 💛

I LOVE seeing older dogs gently adjust their play style for puppies 🥹
