Grammy-winning conductor Kwamé Ryan makes his LA Phil debut with a program of Copland, Mozart, and John Adams.

Hailed as a “dynamic conductor” by the Baltimore Sun, Kwamé Ryan makes his LA Phil debut on a night of effortless joy and excitement.

Acting Concertmaster Bing Wang and Principal Viola Ben Ullery share the spotlight for Mozart’s enduring Sinfonia Concertante, a work that bursts with the delight of exploring new sounds and possibilities.

The program begins with the thrills of John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine and ends with the mighty power and heroism of Copland’s Symphony No. 3.

Composed during the final years of World War II, Copland’s symphony soars with victorious brass and shimmering strings, capturing the essence of 1940s Americana.

In the words of Leonard Bernstein, this symphony is “an American monument, like the Washington Monument or the Lincoln Memorial.”

Please Note: Due to a scheduling conflict, Yuja Wang regrets that she will not be able to appear as previously announced.

Have you ever wondered what happens after you achieve the goal you've been working toward for years?

Most musicians focus on winning the audition.

But what comes next?

In my latest conversation with Ben Ullery, Principal Viola of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, we explore the mindset that keeps an artist growing long after reaching the highest level.

What struck me most wasn't a practice hack or a performance secret.
It was Ben's genuine curiosity.

His willingness to keep learning, to stay open, and to embrace the process rather than chase perfection.

In this episode, we talk about:

🎻 Staying curious throughout your musical career
🎻 Why perfection isn't the goal
🎻 Visualization and performance preparation
🎻 Finding joy in continuous growth

If you've ever felt like there's always another mountain to climb, I think you'll find this conversation both grounding and inspiring.

The LA Phil has appointed its next Principal Viola, Ben Ullery, who has been rising through the ranks since joining the orchestra’s viola section in 2011. He fills a position left vacant when violist Teng Li left the orchestra in 2024. https://www.violinist.com/blog/laurie/20267/30794/ by @bullerbot

Ensembles guide us from the hip soundscapes of New York City to the enchanting, heartfelt atmosphere of the Romantic era.

“Never had his own music made such an impression on him!” When Beethoven composed his String Quartet No. 13, he was “truly in the tears of melancholy.”

Sadness is a feeling that hits everyone at one point or another.

Beethoven’s piece, equally emotional and visionary, breaks away from traditional forms while holding tight to sentiments that resonate universally.

Though written during a tumultuous time in Schumann’s career, his piano quartet surprises with its sunny and delightful character.

It follows Valerie Coleman’s Rubispheres for flute, clarinet, and bassoon—a rhythmic depiction of an exciting day in Lower Manhattan and a soulful night in Washington Heights.
