✨For Daa-nuskess e tsúńuhnuka ✨

✨🐝This piece was inspired by a family heritage project where I did a portrait of a significant person in my lineage. I chose my great-great-great-great grandpa named Chief James Garfield Velarde. Photographed in 1899 by William Henry Jackson. Chief Velarde is an iconic figure with a legacy of great leadership and pushed for the longevity of the Jicarilla Apache people. I see this portrait as my way to celebrate and acknowledge my ancestors’ sacrifice and resistance against colonization. I want to show gratitude that I am everything I am today because of their bravery for survival. 🐝✨

✨Orange Moon✨
✨🐝 This piece is loomed with two-millimeter glass and silicone beads, then transferred onto a white tawed leather corn-pollen pouch with ¾ inch brass cones. Inspired by the traditional beaded artwork of the Jicarilla people, I’m interested in recreating traditional Native artwork with a contemporary twist. The work of artist Bridget Riley and her style and interpretation of optical art influenced the design of my work. The shared intricacy of optical art and loom beading requires an attention to detail that is practiced throughout the design process and into the creation of the piece itself, bridging the gap between modern and traditional styles. As a modern Native American artist, I want to embrace my traditional styles of artwork and create a new perspective of abstract art to truly create art that represents me. 🐝✨

✨“S’ oonah’ N’ ook ah’ ”✨
🐝✨ The piece was loomed with two-millimeter glass beads and transferred onto a white tawed leather corn-pollen pouch. The inspiration was to explore my Native traditional style beadwork. I was curious to explore the recreation of digital glitch art that encapsulates tiny pixels that can be layered to display a larger image. The beads represent the pixels in the digital glitch. My inspiration to combine both elements was to modernize the artwork of Native America and alter the traditional native art of my people to transform it into a new artistic style.
