More than 2,500 people attended the fourth annual Afro-Latino Culture Fest, — a celebration Sharon Cruz, the event’s executive director, had been slowly building upon for more than 30 years. The fest took place at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in downtown Los Angeles. The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC), Latina Futures 2050 Lab, and the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies were among the event sponsors. As a teenager, Cruz organized a theater performance at Roosevelt Park; decades later, she established the non-profit Afro-Latino Education and Arts Collective in L.A. One of the collective’s initiatives is the Afro-Latino Culture Fest, designed to celebrate Afro-Latino food, music, ingenuity, and art while capturing — and documenting — Afro-Latinos’ untold stories. Happy Birthday, Hip Hop! 🎤 On August 11, 1973, a back to school party in the Bronx sparked a cultural movement that has changed music, art, fashion, language and politics around the world. Now more than 50 years later, hip hop continues to inspire creativity and give communities a way to talk about their realities and imagine what the future holds. Today, the Bunche Center and the Hip Hop Initiative, led by Dr. H. Samy Alim, celebrate the artists, DJs, emcees, dancers, writers and communities who built the culture and continue to move it forward. by @bunchecenter

What do statewide economic trends actually look like when viewed through the experiences of Black Californians?  The recent report from the Black Policy Project, a research initiative of the Bunche Center, “Unequal Ground,” answers this question and is highlighted in a new UCLA Newsroom article. The article discusses employment trends and the questions they raise around opportunity, economic stability, and the road to social mobility for Black Californians. Read UCLA's coverage and learn more about why these findings matter for California's future. 🔗 Link in bio #StateOfBlackCalifornia #BlackPolicyProject #BuncheCenter #EconomicOpportunity #EconomicMobility by @bunchecenter
A college degree. A public sector job. Full-time employment. For generations, these were pathways to stability and opportunity for Black Californians. New research from the Bunche Center’s Black Policy Project finds those pathways are becoming increasingly fragile. The latest State of Black California research report, "Unequal Ground, Black Californians' Employment in a Shifting Economy 2024 - 2025," shows: 📈 Black unemployment rose from 5.6% to 7.5%. 📈 Black women's unemployment more than doubled, while college-educated Black women's unemployment more than tripled. 📈 Institutional disconnection from both work and education increased greatly. This isn't just an employment story. It's a story about economic mobility, opportunity, and the future of Black California. Swipe through to explore the findings and learn why policymakers, advocates, and community leaders should pay attention.
