We designed the visual identity for the first exhibition at Wilton Park Living Canvas; Something In The Water. Co-curated by Algorithm & Louisa Carroll, the exhibition visually explores the rich literary history of the Grand Canal area lovingly dubbed as ‘Baggotonia’. Artists and Writers such as Patrick Kavanagh, Flann O’Brien, Mary Lavin and Samuel Beckett gathered at Parsons Bookstore, which in its hay-day was located just around the corner from Wilton Park.
—
The exhibition is made up of 8 Artworks, inspired by 8 selected texts from the aforementioned writers and poets — Swipe for the Artists & Titles!

The primary brand application for the new Douglas Hyde identity was a brand spanking new website. The magazine style website became a destination in itself and serves as the online gallery hosting screenings and online events amongst all the other great stuff.

🔶

We worked with developer extraordinaire, @albadly to create an inclusive and accessible website for every user.

🔶

Challenges that most contemporary art galleries struggle with have to do with accessibility and how to bring conversations about art to larger and non-traditional audiences. With this rebrand and website project we needed to create an accessible and friendly identity that welcomes new engagement, does away with any perceived intimidation whilst still maintaining its intellectual reputation.

🔶

The website and all other communications platforms needed a clear editorial structure that allow for tiered levels of engagement with an information system using headings, sub-heads, introductory paragraph-styles, ‘read more’ tags etc. going from engaging and welcoming to descriptive and informative to academic and critical.

A gallery in essence is an architectural space, hence it is with good reason that a gallery’s branding so often springs from different aspects of its architectural features.

🔶

The concrete ceiling of the gallery and the Trinity Arts Block became the catalyst for the logo and subsequently the brand identity. In contrast to the harsh material quality of the concrete, the square cells with its rounded corners and curved edges that make up the ceiling “feel” surprisingly soft and remind us that the concrete once was a slow-flowing liquid poured into moulds. The rounded shape of the ceiling cells create a tension between sharpness and smoothness and of the negative and positive space.

The identity design for TheDouglas Hyde involved extensive brand applications including a range of gallery documents, business cards, lanyards, signage, billboards, window vinyls and tote bags.

🔶

Through deconstructing and multiplying the mark and re-assembling the fragments of the original form, we developed a dynamic and modular system of symbols, icons and framing devices. The display type face (Forma @djrrb 🧡) echoes that same tension between sharpness and smoothness whilst being high in contrast, legibility and character. Wanting to avoid the white cube aesthetic the colour scheme is led by a ‘muted’ charcoal black and warm off white that can be combined with the warm colours that compliments the grey concrete.

How do you encompass the challenges of the climate emergency for the Arts & Culture, the impact it is going to have on the way we work and how can artists play a role in leading this conversation?

We were inspired by the pragmatic and instructional nature of the artist contributions to base the design on Make-and-Do-Books from our childhood. The aesthetic of these books with their bold colours and framed text and images became a starting point for the book. On the cover and on a postcard (printed on plantable paper stock with wild flower seeds), the question ‘How Do We Start?’ expands out into a maze from several directions and explores ways of answering itself.

🌍 🌎 🌏

🌱 Project Arts Centre is delighted to announce the release of our new publication How Do We Start?

You’ll find a constant hum of Nature in these pages. They were once a tree, after all!

BUY NOW from @projectartscentre 📗 👉
🇮🇪 €15 including postage (Ireland)
🌍 €18 including postage (International)

Following the success of last year’s BAE (Big Art Energy), this limited edition publication is edited by @maeve_eveam & @ciangobrien who asked contributors a deceptively simple question in relation to art which challenges and connects in the time of the climate crisis: How Do We Start?

We’ve drawn an imaginary starting line, an invitation for you to join that conversation if you want to, and a place for those ideas to combine and quicken.

Featuring a gorgeous selection of work by artists Kaajal Modi, @shannamaybreen & Luke Casserly, @kasia.kaminska, and @katieholten, it’s been a joy to connect through this process and see their creativity reveal the possibilities for us in this act of beginning.

Breathe. Reconnect with your deep roots. Get in the sea. Breathe. Lie on the Limestone. Learn. Breathe.

These gentle reconnections offer strength to begin making bolder choices, and build stronger voices to call for climate action from our politicians, our communities and ourselves.

Design by us @bureaubonanza

🌳 As part of this project, we will be working with @hometreecharity to plant a Project Arts Centre micro-forest. Your purchase of the publication will contribute to its planting🌳 by @bureaubonanza

Standard Dreaming is the first book in series of art publications created in collaboration with curator Benjamin Stafford and a selection of young Irish artists.

Standard Dreaming, features the artist Sinead Onóra Kennedy’s Flags, photographed by Caít Fahey, and a text by Ben, written in the form of a screen play. The removable dust jacket cover doubles as a poster for the piece.
