“You should see our chapel. Henry VIII missed it!”

There are few sentences that’ll immediately lure me into a dimly-lit building, but that was a no-brainer. I recently found myself at St James Church in Spilsby, where their Willoughby Chapel sits as an amazing place of remembrance, frozen in time (and indeed, did survive the reformation).

The Willoughby Chapel gains its name through the Willoughby family, who are still based in Lincolnshire, near Bourne. The Willoughby family married into the Bec family, who came across with William the Conqueror, and then married into the Bertie family. Keeping up with this?
The family ultimately became known as Willoughby de Eresby; Willoughby is a nearby village and Eresby was a former family seat. The Willoughby Chapel holds the grand memorials of centuries of Willoughbys, from John, 2nd Baron Willoughby (d.1349) to Peregrine Bertie (d.1601) who was a General under Elizabeth I.
I’ll keep things brief here and expand more in a blog, but I have to say the grandest memorial has to be that for Katherine, 12th Baroness Willoughby d’Eresby, Duchess of Suffolk (d.1580) and her second husband, Richard Bertie. Once richly painted and gilded, it features busts of Katherine and Richard and three large figures holding shields. These figures depict a hermit, a Saracen and a wildman – the latter is my personal favourite, who I’ve decided is an ancestor of Geoff Capes.

Whatcha gonna do with all those teeth, all those teeth inside your face? Well, here’s a few options from history. It’s time for some deathly folklore about gnashers and what to do in the end times…

Stop! Chapel time.
Here’s a few photos of Gainsborough General Cemetery’s Chapel on Cox’s Hill, Gainsborough.
Not currently in use, the cemetery friends group are fundraising for a full restoration effort - one that is even more needed following a serious break-in.
The cemetery was established in 1874 and holds the graves of a vast number of servicemen.
According to Kelly’s Directory of Lincolnshire:

“The Cemetery, on Cox’s hill, consisted originally of 3 acres 1 rood of land, purchased and converted into a public cemetery in 1874, at a cost of £650.

The total cost, including two mortuary chapels was £2,350; in 1891 an addition was made to the cemetery by the purchase of nearly 4 acres of land, which, together with a new carriage road, has cost £,2,000.”
