Storytime.

I saw Burnt Lung for the first time back in November last year, right around the time I picked my camera back up after a long time away from photography.

Some dude wafted his fart towards me twice while I was crouched to the right of the stage taking shots (not of alcohol).

It reminded me of how shitty people can sometimes be at shows.
(Even though I thought it was hilarious.)

And I get it. Photographers sometimes get a bad rep. That they aren't present for the music, that they get in the way, barge through crowds, or are only there to benefit themselves. That they're shooting a band for their own exposure rather than actually being there because they like the artist. I've even heard stories of people kicking or damaging photographers' gear, or saying photography isn't a real art.

Sometimes people also forget that the photographer is there because the band actually hired them to take photos.

I do my best to stay in the shadows. I'll pop in front of someone for a split second to get a shot every now and then, but I try not to linger. I try to stay out of the way. I don't think having a camera gives me any more right to the space than anyone else.

And I've said this before, but I'll say it again: if I'm in the pit, I expect to get pushed around. Just because you have a camera doesn't mean you're untouchable.

I guess the moral of the story is, I like doing what I do, and I try to be respectful of the people around me while I'm doing it.

Everyone is there to enjoy the show.

P.S. Go pick up a copy of Slave to the Sun. Not only is it a killer album, but it's the first record I've had my photos printed on. taken in Kelowna, British Columbia by @burntlung
