POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
There’s a story behind each of our coffees. During 2024, we were lucky enough to visit the beautiful country of Nicaragua 🇳🇮 We’ve built a relationship with Edwin Burgos from Los Pozitos. This is the first coffee we’ve ever roasted where we personally know the farmer and have spent time on his farm during harvest. It’s a special coffee and one we are proud to showcase. Here is a little of Edwin’s story. #ethicalfirst #burrenroastery #anamcoffee #ethicalcoffeecompany #coffeewithimpact #roastedinireland #growninnicaragua #specialitycoffee taken in Burren, Clare, Ireland by @burrencoffee

*** BRAND NEW FROM EL SALVADOR 🇸🇻 ***
We visited a coffee farm in El Salvador back in January 2024 we had been buying coffee from. And honestly we didnt like what we saw. Workers were not treated well. Their living conditions were poor and we felt our presence there was not welcome. We stopped buying from that farm immediately, but El Salvador 🇸🇻 never left us. A beautiful country in Central America with a troubled history, tiny in land mass, but with a very big heart. The people we met were so friendly and so proud of their country. And they welcomed us wherever we went. A country not used to tourists and undeservedly so. It has everything. Mountains, beaches and importantly, the perfect tropical climate for coffee to thrive. Its taken us nearly three years of sourcing, but we are thrilled to finally have El Salvador as an origin back in the roastery.
At the beginning of 2021, Caravela, our Central America sourcing partner, discovered a gem in the region: a group of entrepreneurial women who own and work on their farms with exceptional skill and harmony. These women are deeply passionate about coffee growing, a tradition that has been passed down from their parents and grandparents. They have worked tirelessly for years to maintain and enhance this generational legacy, ensuring that their focus remains on producing high-quality coffee. We hope you love it. A community lot produced entirely by women.

The Africa Moon from Uganda 🇺🇬 is back for 2026.
We visited the remote villages of the Rwenzori Mountains back in May to see first hand the impact this wonderful coffee has on the communities who grow it. @agri_evolve was established in 2016 with a simple yet ambitious goal: to serve as a reliable collection point for both Dried Ugandan Arabica (DRUGAR) and ripe coffee cherries in the Rwenzori Mountains. Around 300-500 smallholders contribute to each lot of Agri Evolve’s coffee. The average farm size of these small holders is about 1.5-2.2 acres. Since their establishment in 2015, Agri Evolve has been on a mission to reshape the landscape of agriculture business in Uganda. Focused on benefiting farmers, families & communities, the company has carved a niche in the Rwenzori region of western Uganda.
Agri Evolve has since become a trusted partner in the farming community, known for paying fair prices consistently and on time—a seemingly simple practice that has made a world of difference for the farmers. Through these efforts, Agri Evolve continues to transform coffee production in the Rwenzori Mountains, fostering growth and sustainability for the future. In September 2023, Agri Evolve set themselves apart from the crowd by earning B Corp certification. This achievement means they’ve exceeded the strict standards B Corp sets for making a positive impact on the world. To put it into perspective, the typical “impact score” of a company is 50.9 out of a 100. Agri Evolve blew past this with a score of 81.5 and especially stood out in their work to reduce poverty in the supply chain. This shows they’re not just about profit – they’re built to make a real difference for their workers, the community, the environment and their customers. by @burrencoffee

Origin Trip Day 4 - @burrencoffee visits Uganda 🇺🇬

Today I visited a few Agri Evolve farms, where we got to see their shade tree initiatives. @agri_evolve cultivates over 130,000 native tree seedlings in their nurseries each year, providing them to farmers to create healthier growing conditions for coffee plants while also helping combat deforestation.

To support the long-term sustainability of coffee farming, Agri Evolve also provides SL14 and SL28 coffee seedlings to farmers, encouraging the replacement of older, lower-yielding trees with more productive and disease-resistant varieties, by building communal coffee nurseries.

One of the highlights was getting to meet a women’s cooperative as they collect their shade trees from the nursery. This happens once a year. The women were beautifully dressed, and the energy was one of excitement and gratitude. They welcomed us with local song and dance to thank us for coming and buying their coffee. I had a serious lump in my throat the whole time, witnessing first hand how lives are being transformed with proper leadership and initiative.

It was the highlight of my time in Uganda 🇺🇬 and an event I will never forget. I have fallen deeply in love with this remote Mountain community, with their coffee, and with their hospitality and spirit. Against all the odds they are determined to move forward. To make lives better for their children and their community. Collectively. There is so so much we could learn from them.

I am grateful to the team at @omwanicoffee for organising this trip and taking us deep into the mountains to learn more about this fascinating origin. I have laughed and been incredibly moved on so many different occasions over the last week.

I will have coffee for sale from Uganda 🇺🇬 and the communities in the Rwenzori mountains from September. It’s one I am super proud to feature. #coffeewithpurpose taken in Rwenzori Mountains by @burrencoffee

Origin Trip Day 3 - @burrencoffee travels to Uganda 🇺🇬 We climbed the Rwenzori Mountains 🏔️ today, up to a peak of between 1900 and 2000masl. Somewhere between losing my breath for the fifth time and staring at endless rows of coffee trees hanging onto the mountainside, something inside me shifted.

I kept thinking about how I was struggling to climb a mountain, while little children passed me carrying their siblings on their backs, huge scarves full of things balanced with a strength that felt almost unreal. Everything is carried up and down the mountain. Water, supplies, firewood, building materials. It humbled me in ways I can’t explain. The way they giggled at my out-of-breath and sweaty face made me feel happy though, catch my breath and carry on.

And then there was Collins, our guide, who turned every step into a lesson. Soil, coffee, survival, resilience, the quiet determination of farmers trying to build better futures for themselves and their communities from steep land and unpredictable weather. I learned more in those hours than I ever expected to.

At the top, the rain found us before we could make our way back down. We hid in a tiny hen house with fried bread and juice, surrounded by laughing children and the sound of rain hitting the roof while the Rwenzoris disappeared into the mist.
The mountains taught me that beauty and hardship can exist in the exact same place.
And somehow, that makes the beauty even greater. And people from Rwenzoris are resilient, welcoming, beautiful inside and out despite their daily struggles. #coffeewithpurpose #coffeewithimpact #ethicallysourced #coffeefromuganda taken in Rwenzori Mountains by @burrencoffee

Origin trip Day 2 - @burrencoffee visits Uganda 🇺🇬

Here are some facts about Uganda to give you some context. Uganda 🇺🇬 is located on the equator, in East Africa with a growing population of 50 million, and one of the poorest countries in the world. 50% of its young population are under the age of 14. Statisticians have calculated the living wage for a Ugandan household to be approx 3.3m schillings for families to afford healthcare, school fees and daily food provisions. Unfortunately less the 3% actually achieve this. The scale of need is overwhelming as the economy fails to keep up with the growing population. Museveni, the current head of State has been in power since 1986 🫣

It is against this backdrop, that Agri Evolve operate. Opened in 2016, they are essentially a family business with a full time team of 140, and the largest employer in the Rwenzori Mountains. They are one of the only B Corp certified businesses in Uganda working directly with more then 20,000 farming families improving income and raising the quality of life for remote mountain communities. The average size of a coffee farm here is between 1-2 acres.

This is not just a coffee place, a wet and dry mill to process coffee. It is a living story of land being restored, of communities being uplifted, of coffee grown with intention, patience, and with deep respect for the environment. I will explain in future posts how this works.

At one point during our visit today, I just stood there and tried to take it all in. Not because I was overwhelmed in a heavy way, but because everything felt so meaningful and real. As a roaster, this experience touched me. I dont just roast coffee to sell. It is my job to also explain where my coffee comes from and more importantly the people behind the coffee. This truly is coffee with purpose. Buying this coffee has an impact back to those thousands of farming families, in remote mountain communities who deserve to have their story told.

I'm grateful for the people, the purpose and the quiet magic of this place. taken in Rwenzori Mountains by @burrencoffee

Origin trip Day 1 - @burrencoffee travels to Uganda 🇺🇬.

Arrived early morning after travelling for 24hrs to what feels like another world 🌍 The air is heavy, the light is golden grey, like morning and evening exist at the same time.

Fruit 🍈 that actually tastes like something - intense, real, delicious and overwhelming. And apparently…24 types of banana exist. 24 🤷‍♂️! I didn’t even know that was a thing. It makes you realise how small your version of “normal” really is.

Almost hurts to see the reality of life here. Women carry heavy loads, kids who should be in school selling fruit at the side of the road, whilst others carry their younger sibling on their back, playing outside in the dust. No mobile screens, no distractions. Life for them happens exclusively outside.

Uganda 🇺🇬 feels unlike anything I’ve known before. Raw, layered, hard and beautiful at the same time. It’s a lot to take in - the contrasts, the energy, the unfamiliarity of it all. But maybe that’s the point. To feel it fully, even when it’s overwhelming and uncomfortable. taken in Kasese by @burrencoffee

*** COLOMBIA 🇨🇴 *** is back in stock This is the second year we have featured this regional lot from @asocafetatama and our friends @rawmaterial.coffee & it’s a coffee that is close to our hearts ♥️ having visited the beautiful village of Santaurio, high in the mountains 🏔️ of Risaralda department back in 2024. The area is well known for its production by of high quality arabica coffee ☕️ Its range of high altitudes and rich volcanic soil make this region ideal. The cooperative behind this regional blend provide stable incomes for the many producers who contribute their coffees to this lot, with both mentoring and educational training in place to improve quality and improving producer’s livelihoods. Expect notes of milk chocolate and rich red berry forest fruit 🍇 Sweet and smooth. #coffeewithimpact #ethicalfirst #sustainablyfarmed #grownincolombia #roastedinclare taken in Anam Coffee by @burrencoffee
