I wrote this article in 2010, when my own children were a few years away from college, but very aware my time was coming. Reading it again, I’m struck by how little has changed. Timeless, if you will.

There are certain moments in life that you never forget. Dropping your child off at college is one of them.

Dropping a child off at college isn’t really about leaving them at a campus. It’s about letting go of the little person you spent 18+ years raising—and trusting that you gave them what they need to find their way in the world.

Why do parents cry? Because in that moment, they’re not just saying goodbye. They’re saying, “We’ve done our part. Now it’s your turn.”

Both my parents, but especially my mom thought days created to honor a father and mother were unnecessary,… “it should be an everyday thing”, she used to say.

I use Father’s Day and everyday to pay tribute to my father by trying to carry on and advance the wisdom he shared with me to make me a better father and a better human.

The key for whatever blessings and success I’ve had in my lifetime will always be my family. Especially my wife, and my children. They are the reasons l’ve learned to face my fears, love myself more, set boundaries, & stand firm on who I am, comprising at times but never wavering.

They taught me patience I didn’t know I had, & strength I never knew I needed.
Every moment, they’re watching, how I handle challenges, how I treat myself, & how I love others. For them, I have tried to lead with courage, kindness, & purpose.

Helping to raise a family is my greatest responsibility & my biggest blessing.

To my children- Just because I give you advice doesn’t mean I’m smarter than you. It means I have made more mistakes than you. I failed first so you don’t have to. I want you to thrive with happiness and joy and be better than I.

My dream isn’t for my children to make me proud. It’s for them to make themselves proud in rooms I’ve never been in, doing things I’ve never dared to try, with a voice that never questions their self worth.

Marrying well is the biggest life hack of all! Thank you @wendy_levy for 35 irreplaceable years. Imagine reading a book with no way to turn back the pages, how carefully would you read it?
