My Buchi

My heart is broken.

Hi, Buchi. I can’t believe you’ve been gone for a month.

For seven years, you gave us immeasurable love, joy, and laughter. I still remember the first time I laid eyes on you and somehow knew you were coming home with us. Flying you across the States was one thing, but nothing compares to how grateful I am that life brought you to me.

You were my first dog. Our first love, besides Kiko. Our soul dog.

Your other mom always said you were different. I brushed it aside then, but now I understand exactly what she meant. There was something about you that reached deeper.

You didn’t just become part of our family. You became part of our hearts, the way we lived, the way we loved, and the way home felt.

So who is Buchi?

Buchi was pure love, the light and joy to everyone whose path he crossed. The smartest boy who somehow knew the names of all 40 of his toys. My boy who slept back-to-back with me or beside my head, always close, always comforting.

And our bath times - our special mother-and-son time. Every single day, without fail, you would lie beside the bathtub while i take ridiculously long baths. You could wait there for hours, and whenever I took too long, you’d check on me to make sure Mama was okay.

Such an ordinary little thing, but it was ours. And now it’s one of the things I miss the most.

You were loving, proud, composed, and stubborn as hell - just like your mama.

I still cannot fathom why God chose to take you away so young. I don’t understand it, and I don’t know if I ever will.

You’ve only broken our hearts once, and it was the day you left.

I hope you know you are Mama’s forever love.

Our little world traveller. My little guy. My best friend. My son.

You were, and will always be, a part of me.

Thank you for choosing us. Thank you for loving us so completely and I hope you’ll come back to us in every lifetime.
