PRIDE. 🌈

A few things you should know about me.

I’m queer, of the pan-ACE variety.

I’m AuDHD.

I’m more introverted than extroverted.

And despite having a fairly public life, I’m actually a pretty private person.

I dress femme mostly because dresses are basically oversized sweatshirts with pockets and because my sensory system has enough to manage already.

Also because, as far as I know, it remains illegal to leave the house naked.

My pronouns are they/them.

Will I correct you?

Probably not.

On Zoom they’re literally right there.

In person it’s usually awkward and most people are trying to get to whatever point they were making anyway.

I don’t correct.

I do notice.

And I absolutely take notes.

PRIDE always makes me think about all the queer folx, the femme folx, the mothering folx, the weird folx, the creative folx, and the folx who spent years learning how to survive while still remaining themselves.

That takes courage.

Sometimes quiet courage.

Sometimes loud courage.

Most days just ordinary courage.

The kind that gets up, goes to work, loves people well, and refuses to disappear.

For me, PRIDE isn’t really about being seen.

It’s about refusing to hide.

It’s about being honest.

It’s about solidarity.

Because 365 days a year there are moments when somebody else’s fear, assumptions, certainty, theology, politics, or discomfort bumps into my existence.

And in those moments I still have to decide whether to fight, flee, fawn, laugh, educate, ignore, or simply keep walking.

The rainbow flags don’t solve that.

What they do is help reveal who keeps walking with you.

And that matters.

So this is my annual reminder:

I’m here.

We’re here.

We’ve been here.

And despite centuries of people being weird about it…

we ain’t going nowhere.

I was 22 years old when a dear friend gifted me this book. Only 2 years past the transition of my mother from this plane.

This book, along with any and everything I could encounter and devour regarding Assata Shakur, were life lines that deeply shaped me and how I continuously choose to show up in the world. This transition, among other, seemingly closer ones, in my life as of late deserves a pause. I am grateful for your life and what you shared with many of us publicly. These were a hit @tsgumbopot 😋 Kiddos were double fisting cookies and asking for more. 😍

In the midst of a major work deadline, coming straight off of 6 weeks of back to back, in and out, travel the kid had a milestone B’earthday with a theme - and I nearly fumbled my part in the whole shindig. Except, I could call on the momgang and have faith things would be spectacular 💫 72-hour turnaround and a 5 AM trip down 45 because there was no one I trust more than my folx back home 🫶🏾 by @busi_b

ACTION 🎬 A new era has begun.

An entire decade of adventures with the only soul in the earth that knows what my heartbeat sounds like from the inside. 💫

It was the happiest of B’earthdays for this kid. He said it’ll take “…a day or three to really feel 10.” But he hasn’t missed a chance at least once a day to height check me all summer.

The first time he asked me to “twirl” his hair I had no idea that I’d end up spending sometimes more than 4 hours every week or so twisting his hair.

It was around this time in 2014 that I learned of his existence. A few months later after genetic testing for a number of things the doctors were afraid of, the midwife called and said - “Well all the chromosomes are healthy, including the ones that tell us it’s a boy.”

My first colonized thought was “thank God I won’t have to do hair.”

I’m so glad Spirit reminds me everyday that these ideas we’ve made up about each other don’t hold water.

I pray every time this kid pushes me to let go of some ideological belief, even the ones that bring me joy or relief, that even if it’s a lot of work and I’m tired—my response is as loving as twisting his hair is.
