today i am choosing to remember and revel in what was truly a mother-daughter trip of a lifetime back to my mom’s hometown of Pittsburgh for the last steelers game of the season in the first few days of last year.
before eaton changed everything.
before 47 changed everything again.
i believe with all my being that the only response to the terrible, destruction we were/are witness to is creation. creation of joy, art, community, memories, whatever!
also, pittsburgh is such a rad and underrated city…the Paris of Appalachia. 😍

happy 6th to the sweetest, silliest little gem, miss ilo maes!
just about every day, i feel acutely aware that she is both as big as she’s ever been and also as little as she’ll ever be.
in almost every moment, i want to freeze time and i also want to experience every bit of my life with her at the same time. LIFE!

Maps are such an incredible way of making sense of our world.
They help us navigate when we are lost.
They show us the path forward.
They capture a specific moment in time.

This map masters that best.
The massiveness of it.
The inequities of it.

Seeing it online is impactful.
But seeing it real life is another thing entirely.
Seeing other ppl seeing the map adds
to the grief but also to the healing ❤️‍🩹

I truly believe the purpose of life is to bear witness for one another. This map facilitates that beautifully.

I went by what was my family home today and while I’ll spare you the sheer devastation that is Altadena, I felt compelled to share one of the few things that remained…Ilo’s chalk drawing on the stone steps outside the house she did on 1/3/25
She instructed me to write a warning to go with the artwork:
please do not step on the volcano
Miraculously, the fire tornado-monster that was Eaton obliged.
I absolutely loved seeing Ilo’s joy at my parent’s house over the last 5 years. She had her special spots and special games and special toys.
It was so very much her space too and she loved it and loved us all being together there.
Today was heart wrenching.
And yet somehow this chalk drawing brought me the slightest bit of joy and reminded me of my all time favorite poem by @maryoliverofficial Don’t Hesitate by @butterdate

On the evening of January 7th, 2025 I returned to my childhood home of 42 years for what would become the very last time.
So many lifelong friends and family and small businesses have lost everything. We are overwhelmed with grief and devastation. We are also deeply humbled by the love and support shown to our small family.

Yesterday our loving little lady turned 5!
What an adventure it has been to watch her become more and more herself.
She loves oysters, ice cream, Oma, swimming and her girlfriends more than anything.
I can’t wait for the adventures that await but am also a little sad to see the toddler/baby days fade away!
