Join us as we open the doors of the historic Town Hall and invite the public to enjoy free coffee, conversation, guided tours, and intimate live performances in one of New York City’s most treasured cultural landmarks. For more than a century, The Town Hall has been a place where artists, activists, civic leaders, and everyday New Yorkers have come together to exchange ideas, celebrate creativity, and engage with the issues of the day. As we recommit to that legacy, we invite you to experience the Hall not only as a theatre, but as a welcoming civic gathering place.

The Town Hall Café experience brings together a vibrant mix of local partners and artists who reflect the creativity and community of New York City. BUUNNI COFFEE will bring its coffee pop-up to the Hall offering free drinks to our visitors, while THE DRAMA BOOK SHOP will offer a selection of books and theatre treasures for sale. Throughout the day, guests can discover the history of the building through guided tours and enjoy a free public performance! (Troy Anthony on 10/14 and Eleri Ward 11/18)

Whether you’re stopping in for a morning coffee, discovering the building’s rich history, browsing books, enjoying live music, or meeting someone new, this is an opportunity to experience The Town Hall as it was always intended—a place where CONVERSATION, CULTURE, AND COMMUNITY COME TOGETHER. taken in The Town Hall by @buunnicoffee

We’re still trying to find the words. There were so many little miracles surrounding this night—so much still being unveiled.

We put so much love into everything we do for our community, and in sha’Allah, we hope you feel it. Creating beautiful, affirming spaces for Black Muslims to experience joy, fellowship & worship together is just as important and urgent as any of the work we do. And this night was ALL of that.

With AMC’s permission, we turned parts of the hallways and interior spaces into prayer spaces. We worshipped. We laughed. We had a fashion show ya'll!. We walked the red carpet. We celebrated one another. Then we watched ourselves made enormous and magnificent on that screen in #yourmotheryourmotheryourmother.

There was so much joy—and something painful in realizing how necessary it was to see ourselves unapologetically at the center. Not peripheral. Not explained. Not translated. Not visiting someone else’s story.

@curry_crayola you took the words of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and from that inspiration wove a story brought to life by @mahershalaali with a transcendent artistry that could only come from Allah. You both gave us such gift. Alhamdulillah that Allah allowed this story to pass through you both and resonate so powerfully with people everywhere. Thank you both for being vulnerable and open with us, and for joining us not as guests, but as family.

We wanted our community to experience this historic moment in a way that felt beautiful, luxurious & worthy of us. We couldn’t have done it alone.

Enormous thanks to our amazing volunteers, & the incredibly accommodating AMC staff; to @buunnicoffee for sponsoring us with quite possibly the most delicious coffee in the world ☕️; to @thehelwalife for making our delicious BMN custom pastries & jumping in when we needed extra hands; and to our friends @mcnny, @pillarsfund, @qubitsss & @najmah53 for believing in Black Muslims Now, investing in our work & helping us create an evening our community won’t soon forget. 💛

We’re still buzzing. Still emotional. Still looking at the pictures and videos like…did that really happen?

It did. 🥹

Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. ✨ by @buunnicoffee

Fourteen years ago, Elias Gurmu and Sarina Prabasi had just opened a coffee shop in a tiny storefront on Pinehurst Avenue. They handed out samples at the Fort Tryon Park Harvest Festival, waiting for the moment someone would ask them where they could buy a bag of beans.☕✨

Today, their Northern Manhattan-based small business Buunni Coffee (a name based on the Amharic word for coffee itself, “buna”) has two locations (in Washington Heights and Inwood), coffee bags for sale at Trader Joe’s, a roastery in the South Bronx, and, as of this spring, a full-service café and grab-and-go coffee spot on Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s (CUIMC) campus.📍

@buunnicoffee’s newest location on Haven Plaza is open to the public at 711 W. 168th St., 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Fourteen years ago, Buunni began with a love of Ethiopian coffee and a belief in the power of coffee to bring people together. So much has changed and grown since then, but that remains at the heart of everything we do.

To our community: neighbors, partners, friends, and champions who have supported us along the way—a heartfelt thank you!

Every cup, visit, order, introduction, and word of encouragement has helped make our journey possible. We’re so grateful to be celebrating 14 years with you. And we're excited about what's ahead, together.
