The dishwasher was invented by a woman who was tired of her workers chipping her china. 🍽️

In 1886, Josephine Cochrane patented a machine with wire racks shaped for plates, cups and saucers, with hot soapy water spraying up from below. By 1893 it had won a prize at the Chicago World’s Fair, and hotels and restaurants were ordering them.

How one works today:
💧 Only a small pool of water collects in the bottom, and it gets sprayed again and again
🔥 A heater warms it, and the spray arms spin from the force of the water
🧪 Alkaline detergent breaks down grease, while enzymes cut through egg, oatmeal and pasta
🫧 The suds are low-foam on purpose, because regular soap would bubble right out the door
✨ Rinse aid makes water sheet off instead of drying into spots

How does your washing machine actually work? 🧺 From river rocks to a drum that thinks for itself.

For most of history, laundry meant scrubbing clothes by hand. Here’s how we got from washboards to the machine in your laundry room, and what’s really happening inside every cycle:
💧 Hot and cold water come in through valves the washer controls on its own
🔄 Top-loaders vs. front-loaders: agitators and impellers vs. tumbling
🧴 Why your detergent and softener go in at different times
🧪 The chemistry: surfactants, oxygen bleach, chlorine bleach, enzymes and softener, and what each one actually does to your clothes

Save this for your next laundry day, and send it to someone who still pours softener in with the detergent 👀

Apparently the dishwasher needs a bath too 😂

With 4 kids, ours is working OVERTIME...so adding @buyactive Dishwasher Cleaner to the routine was a no brainer.

Because I do not have time to wash dishes that were already washed 😂
