“One of the hardest thing about photographing abortion is that it's not high drama,” Glenna Gordon told BuzzFeed News. “Someone goes to a doctor’s appointment, and then they come back.”

Glenna Gordon realized that the graphic images that anti-abortion protesters often display were wildly misleading, and that she didn’t actually know where to go to see accurate photographs of abortions. She set out to make such images herself.

Her work documenting abortions led her across the US, sometimes following the doctors and patients who travel outside their home states to provide or seek abortion care. Since Gordon began her photo series, some states have passed even more restrictive laws, and a brief leaked from the Supreme Court indicates that Roe v. Wade could be overturned in a ruling later this year, making accurate information around abortion more important than ever

"Most people don't know what a fetus looks like. Abortion takes place behind closed doors — for medical privacy and for safety — but I also believe something is gained by creating visuals for this process." by @buzzfeedphoto

It can take over 100 people to save the life of a single gunshot victim. With gun violence as an endemic issue within the United States (and on the rise in certain cities), the mental toll of such caregiving on healthcare workers is rarely seen. @jamessprankle explored how Philadelphia is coping with this in a moving story on @buzzfeednews by @buzzfeedphoto

Like most kids, @ahickeysituation was fascinated with the wild when he was growing up. “Photography helped me understand my love for nature,” he told us. “I feel like I fell in love with them both at the same time.” He started photographing female falconers in New England last year. “Falconers made contributions to conservation efforts in the 1970s by being an integral part of bringing peregrine falcons from the brink of extinction, which feels like a rare environmental success story,” Hickey said. @peregrinefund, which was formed during the population restoration, is led by falconers and is still very active in conservation efforts today. We spoke with Hickey about falcons, training, and how he got the birds to “tolerate” him. 📸 @ahickeysituation taken in New England by @buzzfeedphoto

No place has been defined more by guns than the American West, with its legacy of John Wayne, westerns, and the wide frontier. Working with BuzzFeed News, photographer @jesserieser has criss-crossed the region, visiting Arizona, Missouri, New Mexico, and Oklahoma to explore the prevalence of gun culture. Rieser’s photographs investigate gun culture as a phenomenon that is synonymous with being American. It is deeply ingrained in the country’s history and identity, which celebrates individualism as well as freedom. See more at the link in our bio. 📸 @jesserieser by @buzzfeedphoto

Unhoused people in Los Angeles are using mobile memorials to humanize and grieve the deaths of their community members. People experiencing homelessness are dying at an increasing rate in Los Angeles. A preliminary count from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner found that 1,612 people who were homeless died in 2021. In March, dozens of people gathered in front of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles to commemorate those they’d lost. “I think every life deserves to be honored, and so I think it’s fantastic that somebody is making the space to honor the lives of folks who are often not only forgotten but are denigrated and mistreated by our society,” said Theo Henderson, an activist-in-residence at the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy who is himself unhoused. The photographer Alec Soth is a household name — or he should be. His photographs have been turned into books, shown at the world’s best galleries, and are in countless museum collections. Based in Minneapolis, Soth’s images are often of eccentric, beautiful, and fascinating strangers that he encounters in his travels across the US. Soth himself is nothing if not thoughtful. Unsurprisingly, he has also been thoughtful about others’ photography as well. When we asked him for 10 images that inspired him and his photography career, including these images by @stephen.shore, @andreamodica.photo, and @littlebrownmushroom.
