That rutabaga in the vegetable drawer deserves better than another sad mash.⁣ ⁣ In this month’s Fix Your Plate, Tara Reeves makes the case for giving root vegetables more heat, more room on the pan, and, frankly, more credit.⁣ ⁣ Think parsnips with cumin and lime! Turnips with smoked paprika and maple! Or, at the very least, beets that keep their sweetness instead of losing it to the pot water.⁣ ⁣ Read “Rooted in flavour” at www.buzzpei.com before you put another pot on to boil. by @buzzpei
A Mason jar can hold more than jam.⁣ ⁣ For Charlottetown artist Andrew Henderson, it holds connections to the past. The jars he paints recall the one often found on his family’s kitchen table outside Fredericton, now filled in his artwork with personal keepsakes and ideas worth holding onto.⁣ ⁣ His watercolour All You Need is on the November cover of The Buzz, with a simple thought behind it: some things are worth carrying into the future.⁣ ⁣ Find more of Henderson’s work at Details Fine Art Gallery in Charlottetown, online at andrewhenderson.ca⁣ or on Instagram @andrewarthenderson ⁣ Look for the November issue of The Buzz around the Island or read it online at buzzpei.com by @buzzpei
When a municipal candidate knocks on your door… ask about the arts.⁣ ⁣ The local stage, the gallery, the festival you look forward to every year, the historic building you’d hate to lose. These things help make a community somewhere people want to live and local governments have a role in keeping them thriving.⁣ ⁣ In this month’s Creative Careers, Jane Ledwell explores what it means to vote for arts, culture, and heritage, with practical questions to put to candidates about funding, public spaces, programming, and preservation.⁣ ⁣ Read “Vote arts and culture” at buzzpei.com and have a question ready for the next knock. by @buzzpei
Haviland House has been part of Charlottetown since 1869. Its next chapter puts the woman who built it back in the spotlight. The property is transitioning from the Haviland Club to the Esther Lowden Heritage Trust, named for the early Island entrepreneur behind the historic house. The Trust’s goal is to preserve the property and keep people coming through its doors for heritage tours, performances, educational activities, and community gatherings. That includes Tea & Tales, which continues through the end of October with afternoons of tea, conversation, and storytelling. Arts and culture fill the pages of The Buzz but island small businesses help make every issue possible.⁣ ⁣ They advertise, send in news and press releases, make room for stacks of issues by the door, and help readers find their next show, exhibition, or Saturday afternoon plan.⁣ ⁣ This Small Business Week, we want to say thank you to every Island business that supports The Buzz! You are helping to keep PEI’s arts, culture, and community news in print and within reach. We think that’s something worth celebrating.⁣ ⁣ Tag your favourite small business to say thank you! by @buzzpei

A tree that grows in barren, unforgiving ground is... a pretty good subject for a folk song, no?⁣ ⁣ PEI singer-songwriter Shane Pendergast’s new single, “Jack Pine,” takes its inspiration from the hardy tree and Milton Acorn’s writing about it. It’s about adapting to difficult surroundings while holding onto who you are.⁣ ⁣ Recorded mostly live off the floor, the track features backing vocals from Catherine MacLellan and gives listeners a first taste of Pendergast’s upcoming fifth album, Jack Pine, out October 23rd.⁣ ⁣ If the name sounds familiar, Pendergast also hosts The Jack Pine Folk Club, bringing folk music and poetry together here on the Island.⁣ ⁣ Read more about the song and the inspiration behind it at buzzpei.com or the link in our bio. by @buzzpei
