OK, @nba, we saw you all of the 2nd Black History Month of February, with your “celebratory warmup shirt” graphics that your players (especially you, @money23green👍🏽) were wearing during games. We couldn’t help but find the statement somewhat situationally quizzical, so we wanted to help you out and offer up our own versions of your design for consideration. Yep, January was, indeed, the first Black History Month of 2023. And March will be the third, April the fourth and so on and so on. Huge thanks are owed to Dr. Carter G. Woodson for establishing Black History Month in 1926 and to former President, the late Gerald R. Ford, for making sure it was recognized nationally in 1976. But Black History Month is really more like Black History MONTHS. Because Black Americans are truly the ‘Soul Of America’ and as such, making history is an everyday pursuit. Unquestionably, our ancestors are to be duly commemorated with their myriad accomplishments and contributions to this country and the world highlighted and celebrated. But that celebration shall not be confined to a mere twenty eight days. July 25th marked what would have been Mr. Emmett Till’s 81st birthday. Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman at the center of the reason why we must never forget his all-too brief time on Earth, is still very much alive and free to enjoy her remaining years in this realm. She even had the audacity — or shall we say — the ‘caucacity’ — to claim, disgustingly, in an ‘unpublished memoir’ that she was also a ‘victim’ of the brutal lynching that took Emmett’s life in the summer of 1955 in Money, Mississippi. To say that she is at least delusional is a serious insult to delusion. Just last month, after 67 years, an arrest warrant for Donham was found in a basement of a Greenwood, Mississippi courthouse, making her claims of victimhood all the more ludicrous and absurd. Clearly, she has benefited from having the ‘complexion for the protection’ to paraphrase the late comedic genius Paul Mooney, but this is certainly no laughing matter, of course. Taking into account that the U.S. Department of Justice undoubtedly has as full a plate as it’s had in many years, we still can’t help but wonder what, if anything, will be done with that warrant. No legal scholars are we, but one would think that it SHOULD still be served and that Ms. Donham SHOULD have to face the proverbial music for the lies she told that resulted in her husband and brother-in-law (both acquitted of murder charges by an all white, all male jury — both now deceased) kidnapping, pistol-whipping, torturing and ultimately murdering Emmett Till then discarding him, as if he were so much trash, into the Tallahatchie River. America has taught Black folks not to hold our collective breath waiting for real justice to be served on a any number of fronts, but we will not take our eyes of this case. We MUST not. EVER. **(The unofficial estimate of the number of times Jayland Walker was actually hit by officers’ bullets was initially thought to be 60. An official medical examiner’s report now places the number at 46 times he was directly struck and/or grazed by police fire. As anyone knows, it only takes a single ‘well-placed’ shot to kill a person).** Jayland Walker was laid to rest earlier this week. His death is YET ANOTHER abhorrent example of an unarmed, non-violent Black citizen in America who would still be living his life were it not for a fatal encounter with the biggest and most notorious gang of domestic terrorists in the whole, entire country; the ones whose job it’s supposed to be to ‘protect and serve’, aka the American police force. They executed Mr. Walker as if he were a rabid, threatening beast — and a rabid, threatening beast wouldn’t have deserved such treatment. And that really is central to the angry dispositions and excessive brutality that so many law enforcement officers exhibit towards Black Americans: they don’t regard or even view us as HUMAN BEINGS. This has been not just an American perspective, but a world view of Black people that predates our ancestors being enslaved and trafficked throughout the globe. The police particularly (including self-hating BLACK cops) see us as inhuman, therefore they choose to express themselves inhumanely whenever they encounter us. After their murderous onslaught, the cops in Jayland’s case decided it was only appropriate and necessary to handcuff his bullet-riddled corpse before they finally put it in a body bag. This situation went well beyond what might be described as ‘overkill’ to what actually appears to be more of a ‘thrill kill’ by these officers. As is seemingly standard, cliché cop procedure, Jayland Walker’s killers are currently on ‘paid administrative leave’. And as it should be, the heat from the streets in Akron is on high. Time to give up the names, Akron P.D. Paying respects to the 7 people who were gunned down by a TRMP-loving white domestic terrorist coward armed with an assault rifle one week ago today at a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, IL. Thirty other citizens were wounded and/or injured in the incident; one of them is an 8-year old boy who is now paralyzed from the waist down. On that same holiday weekend, 10 people were shot and killed and 62 more wounded in neighboring Chicago. That city is most definitely not alone as gun violence is all the rage from sea to shining sea. Since then, America has gone back to business as usual as if nothing’s changed — because it really hasn’t. We exist between the barrages of bullets and scenes of carnage and devastation wrought by the individuals who justified in unleashing them. The families, friends and loved ones of those lost and injured by the scourge of ‘The Great American Shoot’em Up’ are FOREVER changed, but to them the gutless GOP Congressmen and women will continually offer only more soulless, empty ‘thoughts and prayers’. One Repugnican Congresswoman from Arizona recently stated proudly that she would shoot her 5 grandchildren before she’d ever give up her guns. What is anyone to do with that level of insanity?? These ‘beings’ have no shame, so you can’t shame them and they don’t really give a damn if you try. They are addicted to this sickness because it pays them and the rest of our lives mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to them. There is, of course, NO EASY SOLUTION to this extremely multi-layered and complex problem. But to simply not do what in any other ‘civilized’ place in the world could only be described as ‘sensible’ to try to mitigate it is in itself reprehensible.
