We’re looking for artists, makers, entrepreneurs, musicians, chefs, athletes, and community leaders who want to mentor young people by sharing what they love. Applications for the 2026-27 school year will open Monday. It’s a paid coaching opportunity, so start dreaming up your 12 week club curriculum and putting your ideas on paper. An expression of joy, art and movement. Breakdancing Club has become a staple, not only at Hillis, but for multiple schools within the @desmoinespublicschools. From September through May, we had the blessing and opportunity to build alongside our Hillis family. From the first day to our last, we continued working to provide a safe and special learning environment where students could create and thrive together.Our partnership with the Hillis community, Dr. Young, Ms. Dejah Banks, and @desmoinespublicschools as a whole means the world to us. Creative Kicks 👟🎨After school clubs provide students the chance to learn, create, and grow through discovery in ways that feel exciting, creative, and fun alongside local artists, community leaders, and entrepreneurs looking to connect with our youth.This year, our commitment to @desmoinespublicschools has been providing daily K–5 after school programming at Hillis Elementary that supports both district curriculum and students’ academic and social-emotional growth. Creative Coaches is built around student voice and connection. At the end of every session, we ask students what they want to learn, create, and experience next — and Creative Kicks was the unanimous choice this round. 🫡Over several weeks, students learned the value of patience, long term planning, and creative problem solving as they moved from sketching ideas, to painting flat canvas, to transforming their designs onto 3D shoes. They explored layering techniques, stencils, brush styles, and different painting approaches while bringing their ideas to life.It’s beautiful to see your confidence grow as you practice problem solving, express yourselves creatively, and take pride in creating something completely your own, friends. 🌿🎨 @redcreativekicks1 📸 @c.briddell by @bwell.foundation

Hillis staff — we see how much you show up and care for your students every single day, and we’re so grateful for the way you’ve welcomed and supported us too. Creative Coaches at Hillis 🎨✨We’re at Hillis Elementary five days a week, all school year, creating space for students to explore and create. The best part of my job is telling the stories of cool people I meet in town. Like B.Well, the owner of (imo) the best bar in Des Moines, who also makes music after hours. We hope the start of 2026 has been good to you and yours! 2025 was a year of growth and new endeavors for our team. We’re very thankful to have been accepted into the Hillis Elementary family. We will start session 3 of our after school programming with them starting Monday, January 26. Here are a couple photos from the tail end of session 2 where our students worked and practiced for weeks with our coaches to prepare for a school wide assembly that showcased a little of what they learned during club!
