about three years ago i got super obsessed w mass-market tattoo magazines, buying them in lots, obsessing over the lore and the images, the cast of characters, etc. it became all encompassing and i made this zine to commemorate that time, it’s been out of print for a long time but i decided to bring it back for this weekend at @printedmatter_artbookfairs and beyond…

the zine is 102 pages and feature 400+ images and writing about every single image. every tattooer is credited when that information is available and i tried to include any weird aside i found out in my journeys. i am a lover of magazines and an outsider to tattoo culture grateful for the window in.

some people may already have one but if you don’t… hit the link in my bio or find me in the zine tent !! by @bwene

TONIGHT ON NTS, WE ARE LIVE ON 2️⃣ W/ A2 !!!

we are beyond honored to have cleveland’s own, the legend aaron melnick aka a-double aka brainwashed aaron (of integrity, inmates, in cold blood, nuclae, and more!!) as a guest!! aaron was so kind to sit down w us and do an interview about his life and music, spliced in between songs he’s written or been involved in, in loose chronological order. how can you put a lifetime of creating and helping define the sound of a city, our scene, the world, into one hour!!!! we don’t know if its possible and some stuff had to be left on the cutting room floor, but we tried!!! thank you for everything aaron.

the show is on LIVE tonight at 11pm EDT!! and then archived until the end of time tomorrow on the @nts_radio website and app!!!

please go buy the @_nuclae_ lp from @rebirthrecords_ and the accompanying book, bringing out the beast, wherever books are sold and get lost in the new worlds that aaron is creating !!!

special thanks always to @theclevostyle !!

Live on NTS 2 tonight at 11 pm / 23 EDT… new demystification radio mini series: Dance hard or die! Dedicated to all forms of heavy dancing, moshing, and letting it all out on the dance floor. The inaugural episode on BAILE DE CORREDOR 👊⚡️popularized in Rio and its surrounding areas in the 90’s and into the early 2000’s, baile de corredor literally translates to “hallway party” or “hallway dancing”. This party would consist of two sides, side A and side B, would meet in the middle (the hallway) and beat each other up.

The music associated with these parties is similar to a lot of all the “funks das antigas” characterized by genius sampling, remixing and mpc chopping, but layered typically with samples and lyrics referencing how your team, crew, neighborhood, etc is better than the rest. Many songs also have lyrics directly referencing the parties, groups proudly proclaiming to be a side A warrior and taunting side B (or visa versa).

It’s fascinating and kinda beautiful to me how so many musics inspire an aggressive outlet in dancing, especially musics associated with youth. There’s something so pure about the human instinct to want to punch someone, as pure as the instinct to be moved to do so by lyrics about how your crew is gunna crush the other crew.

This episode is truly only possible due to the DJs, archivists, and historians who have put so much time and energy into preserving this culture and history on YouTube. All the songs have been picked from YouTube (some lacking in fidelity maybe but the song is so amazing who could care). Most of the people preserving this history on YouTube seemed to have been involved in their teenage and young adult lives. Any popular baile de corredor video is flooded with comments about how these songs can transport them back to being 17 years old.

This episode will be archived on the NTS website the following day after airing. Thanks for listening to all who tune in! by @bwene

LIVE ON NTS 2️⃣ TONIGHT AT 11PM / 2300 EDT… is a dedication to some of my favorite music of all time… i’m talking NO FUTURE + RIOT CITY (+ BEAT THE SYSTEM, PAX, some CLAY, RONDELET, etc…) i’m talking PUNKS + SKINS… the UK’s hardcore, the second wave of UK punk, or as most know it, UK82 !!

some songs on here are some of the first i ever heard when i got into punk, others were introduced to me like 15 years ago when i started to go mad trying to buy every no future or riot city single with the ian glasper burning britain book and gabesuk82.blogspot.com as my bibles…

life will never be the same… like the intro to the skinhead rocknroll’s damned ones vol. 2 book reads… “music, clothes, fanzines, sleepless nights, nothing else mattered. now that the dream is gone i have to stick to this reality.” (@cool_hiss and my favorite quote)

anyway, this is just an hour of me playing some records in my bedroom, i don’t talk at all, we did enough of that last time… and will again in the future… as always this will be archived tomorrow and hopefully online until we are all dust!!!!

🚨 TONIGHT TONIGHT TONIGHT @ 11PM (23:00 HOURS) EST ON NTS CHANNEL 2️⃣ is the DEMYSTIFICATION RADIO HOUR… featuring our friend CC!!

this week we have a hyper special episode playing some rare, live, or demo only NYHC (plus one nj with nyc ties + the bad brains who will always be from wash, dc) all straight from the archive of our good friend chris corry, or cc, as the world knows him. he’s been involved in many bands (currently: bygone, sin offering, lifeless dark, etc. // historically: no tolerance, mind eraser, step forward, stop and think, magic circle, invasion + much much more), he’s been involved in releasing and recording and mixing some of your favorite things, and has an encyclopedic brain for hardcore punk music (he was one my early obscuro hc teachers, i was LOCKED in on him and aj’s bidhardcore website every single day in my youth. bring back google reader / death to substack)

anyway, cc brought us so many great tracks and in this episode we only got to play 12 of them and to talk about 11. we go in deep and with time, i know we coulda gone in deeper!! (for those who’ve read this far: the tracklisting is in the comments!!)

the art for this episode was done by young legend @rubyalbie, we messed up the sizing (forgive us ruby!!) so scroll one if you want to see the beautiful work in full.

also, as an added bonus, if you keepscrolling: we’ve included every page of cooch and cc’s pocket guide to rare and unheard nyhc that they made for the PLANET MENTAL record release over 20 years ago, legends of the trench for eternity !! (also to clarify, cooch made most of this zine while cc was fast asleep on a couch.) ENJOY!

okay, see ya at 11, and then 24 hours after that, it WILL be archived and up for streaming until the end of time 🫡 by @bwene
