an experimentation from earlier this year ~
I have been grappling with finding ways to present dance and performance on film while still preserving its spontaneity and physicality.
Performance’s intimacy is inevitably strung to its immediacy; it is a constant reaction to environment and self in real-time.

Performance lies in the in-between.. constantly on the edge of infinite outcomes and next moves. Even if it is choreographed or rehearsed, the micro adjustments, backaches, mess-ups, variation in emotion, and fumbles are what ties dance to reality- it can never be completely predicted.

When we document performance and fix it onto a standard screen, however, the magic of the immediate dissipates. We have arrived at point B indefinitely, and are no longer swimming in the exciting possibility of having departed, but not yet arrived.

When the fabric seems to react to the dancing, or when we lose someone from the frame because the “screen” happened to blow away, I am beginning to get some of that variable interaction back, but not fully.

“I Want To Be Like A Tree”
Fabric, string, wax, charcoal, bio plastic, and found organic materials

I formed this with the intention that creation doesn’t always have to be laborious… it can also come simply from the essence of being (like a tree). I don’t always have to compete or be better than the person next to me to find my own success & growth..

I also yearned to create like nature does with an awareness that it is an impossible feat (but maybe I can get close because it made me) by @by.bye.ash
