Many shop visits and a final purchase order later I wanted to share my tile shop tales with you. And this one is for my Berliners out there. I went to three shops (some of them multiple times) and I’ll tell you exactly which shop is right for you, depending on your design brief.

So weather you’re renovating your kitchen, bathroom or just want to add some tiles for decorative purposes, this episode is for you.

Beyond excited to finally launch post number one today! I’ve rewritten this caption more times than I’m willing to admit, so let’s keep it simple.

Bathroom renovation in a Berlin Gründerzeit flat: three moodboards, three mistakes, in just ten square metres. I want to be honest with you all: This is my first bathroom design and I think I did everything wrong that I possibly could, yet I´ve learned so much.

Save this if a bathroom renovation is on your horizon. Tiles come down very soon 🔨

You can find inspiration everywhere, you just need to leave the house.

Our kitchen floor is getting a makeover this week and I couldn’t be more excited! The old floor was dark brown, Tuscan-style and not even level. Since the kitchen wasn’t in yet, out it went. Staying with checkerboard was the easy call. The border wasn’t. This kitchen has more corners than I’d like to admit, and every draft fixed one thing and broke another.

My favourite part of the whole process: I walked into a café, asked the owner where his floor came from, and he told me everything. People are generous with this stuff. Ask. Thank you, @zacharias.tagesbar

My friend’s living room layout had bugged her for two years!! One episode of friends and a short conversation later, the sofa was on a different wall and the room finally made sense.

Plenty of interior problems in a rented flat are like that. Too small to call an architect about, and still annoying every single evening. You know something’s off. You just can’t name it yet.

So I’ve been building a solution for exactly this: an hour with me on the corner that’s been bugging you, online or at yours in Berlin. It opens next week 💃.

Our bathroom design for me is a labor of love. The vision was a hotel en-suite, old NYC vibe to match the Altbau charme, combined with some modern elements. And this showerhead from @sklum.welovedesign_de to me is the perfect answer to that brief. So grab pen and paper, sit down in the room you want to change, and work through them. What you write down becomes your (more informed) shopping list.

🎨 Beige paint is what you choose when you don’t want to make a mistake with wall colour.

Reader, I made a mistake.

This was before I got my interior design degree and I want to share this with you as I see the mistake happening in many flats. I stood in the shop, picked the warmest, safest colour on the card, and painted the whole living room. And weeks after, I went into the room and quietly tried to work out what’s bothering me. Nothing is wrong exactly. Everything is warm and calm and perfectly nice. It’s just that my flat now looks like someone turned the contrast down. The color quietly agreed with everything else in the room, and now half of it has nothing left to say.

Two things had to go. One thing I kept out of pure stubbornness. One small thing saved the room. The reel has the full damage report.

🍂🍁 It’s fall and that is by far my favorite season. Everyone’s rewatching Gilmore Girls. So am I, after this.
But first I’m working on my clients moodboard which marks step 2 of behind the scenes of working with an interior designer. In this episode I’ll talk fashion, materials, and one palette to hold it together.

Before any furniture gets picked, I want to know how the room should feel. And whilst many designers turn to nature for inspiration, I like to choose a different entry point: fashion designers, because they’ve already solved which colours and fabrics belong together. Then I work with samples in my hands and ultimately turn to the colour wheel, until everything agrees, because there’s def. a couple of rules to be followed when working on a design scheme.

💃 It’s finally here: my bathroom moodboard.

A renovation in a 130 year old Berlin flat takes time. This is the thinking behind the design, before anything is built.
It started with one tile. An Art Nouveau flower tile from a Berlin manufacturer that still works with the old techniques and old recipes.

From there everything else followed: subway tiles for the New York nostalgia, a floor-standing toilet in the old style, a vintage dresser turned into a sink with natural stone on top, and a statement floor, because a bathroom should feel like a real room and not a corridor with a tap. Brass for the finishes. That part was never up for discussion.
