Instruction manual and proof-of-concept zine for the p5riso@home tool/toy I posted about earlier. I made this for Paperjam Zine Fair (by @torontozinelibrary) this past April, as I was trying to figure out a way to spread the word about this little open source side project of mine. And as I was making it, I realized that it was not easy to explain the concept and the process to people who don’t normally dabble in computer programming. So the zine got a little bigger, with clearer instructions and better visuals, and I made the image on the cover using the tool itself as a physical proof of concept. I did sell out of the zine that day, but I think what caught people’s eye wasn’t 100% just the image processing tool I had made, but the fact that I was selling a zine that pushed the boundaries of what home printers could do, that the zine was a fun artifact of this experiment. A belated thank you to @artofthebookfestival for having me at their festival! As an exhibitor, I received an honorarium that gave me extra room for risk and experimentation — so instead of just showing up with books/zines/comics for sale as I normally do, I ran a demo booth for my “Fake Risograph” (p5.riso@home) web app and even brought in my own home printer so that people could play with the web app and print it right there and then for free. I had anticipated that people would find the interactive booth fun (we made 31 prints), but I hadn’t realized how many people would take the time out to send me their own photos (25 of 31 prints). Nor was I prepared for how much joy it would bring for folks to be able to get a slightly jazzed up print of their cat/friend/artwork/themselves. One person even tipped me for my service 🙏🏼 Anyway for those of you who missed it, the web app is free and open source (it builds on other people’s open source work, I can’t even take full credit), so everyone can download it and play around with it at home. And if you’re stuck setting it up, I sell an instruction zine for a measly four dollars on my webstore. Art shows & works in Toronto I encountered over the past few months (and one bonus one in Montreal that was about Toronto): 1️⃣ Global Convenience by Trevor Wheatley @treverferever, Cosmo Dean @cchdean & @puncturedesign, a floating-on-the-lake, life-like sculpture of a convenience store. 2️⃣ ᐁᐧᐢᑫᐧᐱᑖᑲᐣ wîskwêpitâkan – Sacred Bundle, Adele ᒪᐢᑿᓱᐤᐏᐢᑵᐤ Arseneau at the Tangled Art Gallery @tangled_arts curated by Jenna Reid @fieldnotes_by_jennareid that remembers and grieves those who were in the residential school system through colorful beaded sculptures of cradleboards set in rows on top of large animal skins. 3️⃣ A Decision Between Us by Claire Greenshaw @clairegreenshaw (at The Power Plant @thepowerplantto) an interactive wall-sized pencil drawing of a glacier that invites visitors to pick up an eraser to destroy it. 4️⃣ Raindrop Riso Show hosted by Some Print Studio @someprintstudio at San Cafe @sancafe.meow featuring risograph postcards by 29 artists, including a display where the colourful postcards are folded up like umbrellas and hung from the ceiling. 5️⃣ Absent Moon by Teresa Chan @7eresa_storyteller (as part of AACT @aact.community’s On Practices of Belonging at @yyzartistsoutlet), a red moon painted solely using a small teacher‘s stamp with the Chinese characters for absent. 6️⃣ Kai Chan’s 400 Blows at The 50 Gladstone, which includes various abstract, experimental ink and watercolour drawings on rice paper. 7️⃣ Interactive Entertainment Architecture: Culture Lab, Toronto 1991–1994 at the @canadiancentreforarchitecture – a time portal back to the early 90s digital art scene in Toronto, with a particular emphasis on virtual/digital architecture, shown through recordings of a public talk series, as well as printed and website artifacts from that era. #toronto #art #thingsisaw Image descriptions included above within the caption text. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @byjasonli

Now available on my online store! How the zine works: I draw packaging from one of Trader Joe’s ethnic sub-brands and then pair it with a drawing of famous person from that ethnicity. The catch: the name has to be the same. E.g. Trader Ming’s (their Chinese food sub-brand) is paired with famous basketball player Yao Ming. 🏀🥟 Many thanks to @mirkdrop for featuring it in their Zine-of-the-Month Club and @adoaboutthings for the original inspiration (and import/export expertise) ⭐️ I made this one a while ago, but after @mirkdrop discovered it at @torontocomics (and @ellermilla at @zinedump.fyi), I realized it was time to roll up my sleeves and do this photoshoot I’ve been slowly hoarding Trader Joe’s packaging for. Proud to be an exhibitor at the inaugural @artofthebookfestival by @workbookeditions & team 💙! I will be running live demos of my open source tool (p5.riso@home) to replicate risograph effects on your home printer. So come by with your favorite photo or illustration, and have it fake-risograph printed through my home printer setup! I will also be around to answer any questions about p5.riso@home if any of you have had issues installing it or run into any bugs I’ve yet to quash.
