A drawn diary of light and silence

🌿 Hey there! Welcome to my cozy Instagram diary — come on in and make yourself at home. Here, I want to share my drawing journey and some of the thoughts that accompany me along the way. I’m endlessly inspired by nature’s beauty, and I love translating its moods into my illustrations.

I first fell for watercolors because of their delightful unpredictability — how colors merge and flow. Now I’m curious to try something new — gouache and acrylics. These paints give me more options: they can resemble watercolor in their transparency and fluidity, yet can also build up into rich, opaque layers. What especially attracts me is layering light colors over dark ones — something watercolor doesn’t allow.

Make yourself comfortable. Let’s create and enjoy this journey together! I’m so happy you’re here!

Day 50: Molino de Kat for @virtual_sketchers 🌸✨
I couldn’t resist this lovely windmill and decided to join the challenge and paint it. The photo reference was too beautiful to pass up.
Huge thanks to @virtual_sketchers for the reference.
Before painting, I did a few quick sketches to fit it into the square format of my sketchbook. I also made a color wheel with the colors I planned to use, which was a first for me. I really liked it and think I should get to know my paints better 😊
I had so much fun painting this windmill, and I’m really happy with how it turned out 🥰

I tried the Ohuhu Direct-ink Acrylic Markers Hilo 72, and I’m really impressed by how smoothly the colors blend together. It feels very different from the markers I’ve used before. You don’t need a separate brush for blending, since you can do it directly with the markers themselves. So convenient!

I also really loved having so many shades to choose from 💜 Different tones work beautifully for different layers of the landscape, which helps give the forest more depth 😻💖

Day 181: Tall rose bush in acrylic markers 🌸

Here are some step-by-step photos of the summer rose bush. In this drawing, I tried using more shades than in my previous flower drawings, and I really like how the color palette turned out 💕

by MurMar❣️

Markers: @languo.lab
#stepbystep #sketchbookpainting #landscape #acrylicmarkers

The main steps:

1. Sketch the overall shape
I started with a rough sketch of the basic shapes that will later make up the rose bush, using a medium green shade.

2. Refine the silhouette
Using the same shade, I drew in more leaves to define the silhouette and build the main shape of the bush.

3. Create the lighter areas
With a lighter green shade, I drew the leaves catching more light, with more toward the top and fewer toward the bottom.

4. Draw the lightest leaves
Using the lightest green shade, I filled in the brightest areas of the foliage.

5. Place the roses
With medium pink shades, I marked out where the flowers will be.

6. Build up the shadows on the roses
Using darker pink shades, I created the shadows, defined the petals, and filled some of the flowers completely with a darker shade.

7. Deepen the shadows in the foliage
With darker green shades, I gave the rose bush more depth.

8. Bring in some blue
I used a little blue in the shadows. This is my favorite step. I feel like it really brings the drawing to life.

9. Work on the lighter parts of the flowers
Using lighter pink shades, I drew in the lighter details on the roses.

10. Finishing details
I drew some tiny leaves and branches.

11. Highlights
For the final touches, I used light yellow on the leaves and white on the flowers.

12. Done! 🥳

Day 180: Candy Clouds in Watercolor 💕
Ad | Paints provided by @fuumuuibrushes_official

I got to try the 24-Color Opaque Semi-Solid Watercolor Paint Set in the Dreamy Macaron palette 💜✨
I hadn’t painted with watercolors in ages, so I was really happy to come back to them!

These paints completely won me over. The colors are beautiful, and I love the way they behave on paper. They spread so nicely, blend easily with each other, and can be softened or lifted with a wet brush. You can also blot the paint with a paper towel, just like with traditional watercolors.

And on top of that, the lighter shades layer beautifully over darker ones! It honestly feels like magic ✨
I’m absolutely in love with this set 💕💜

Day 179: Rose bush in acrylic markers (photos) 🌸
Sharing some step-by-step photos of this rose bush drawing. I recently posted the process video for this piece 💜

by MurMar❣️

Markers: @languo.lab
#stepbystep #sketchbookpainting #landscape #acrylicmarkers

Before moving on to markers, I made a few pencil sketches first.

They helped me plan the overall shape of the plants, the darker areas, and the number and placement of the flowers 🌸

Here’s how I drew this rose bush step by step🌸:

1. Line sketch and base fill
I started building the overall shape of the rose bush directly with a marker, then filled it in with the base color.

2. Silhouette details
Adding details to the silhouette: tiny leaves and branches.

3. Darker shade
I use a darker green to break up the light base fill — first inside the main shape, then near the ground.

4. Shadows
For the shadows, I use the darkest shades: dark green and a cooler dark blue. I add a few shadow accents with them. I really like adding this kind of dark blue to the leafy parts of the bush — it gives the drawing a livelier feel :)

5. Flower base fill
Using the two lightest pink shades, I block in the base for the roses. I try to place most of the flowers on the upper leafy parts of the bush.

6. Darker flower shade
With darker pink shades, I fill in some of the flowers and add shadows.

7. Flower shadows
Using the darkest pink shade, I add a few deeper accents to the flowers.

8. Details
At this stage, I add the most contrasting details and the centers of some flowers. I used a beige shade for the flower centers. With the lightest green, I added some sunlit leaves, plus a bit of blue in the shadows.

9. Grass
For the final step, I add a little grass in front of the bush. I used three green shades for this: the lightest green, a medium green, and a darker green. I also used the darkest rose shade to draw a few fallen petals.

Day 178: Fluffy summer spruce tree in acrylic markers (photos) 🩵
Here are some step-by-step photos of the summer spruce tree from one of my previous videos. In this drawing, I used my usual set of green shades and tried pushing the tree toward a cooler color palette. That shift came through better than I expected, so I’m really happy with how it turned out🩵

by MurMar❣️

Markers: @languo.lab
#stepbystep #sketchbookpainting #landscape #acrylicmarkers

The main steps:
1. Sketch the overall shape
A rough sketch of the tree’s silhouette, filled in with a medium green shade.

2. Add the shadows
At this stage, I used the shape of the shadows to emphasize the form of the fluffy spruce branches.

3. Draw the trunk and branches
The overall shape of the trunk and the branches peeking through the spruce boughs.

4. Add an extra shade
The most interesting part — adding a blue shade to the branches near the shadows.

5. Add the darkest accents
Using a dark blue shade to add accent shadows to the crown of the tree.

6. Add contrasting details
At this stage, I add the lightest highlights to the branches and the darkest details to the trunk. The most satisfying step ☺️

7. Add some grass
I added a bit of grass around the tree using the lightest and medium green shades.

8. Done! 🥳

Day 177: Summer rose bush with acrylic markers 🌸
Sharing a step-by-step video of drawing a rose bush with acrylic markers. This time, my process was a little messy, and I also decided to step away from my usual way of filling in the base: I drew the leaves around the silhouette first, and only then filled in the rest. This method actually turned out to be pretty convenient too ☺️

Day 176: Wild rose bush in acrylic markers 🌸
I’m still practicing drawing summer roses, so here’s a pink wild rose bush 🤍
This time, I tried a slightly different approach: I started with a pencil sketch, and then used acrylic markers to draw the leaves right away.

Here are the main steps:
1. Rough pencil sketches to figure out the composition
2. Sketch
3. Leaves around the outline of the bush. Here, I drew the lighter parts of the bush
4. Flower base fill
5. Adding shadows to the bush
6. Darker details
7. Shadows on the flowers
8. An additional pink shade on the flowers
9. Light details on the flowers and the darkest accents in the leaf shadows
10. White accents on the flowers and the leaves in the lit areas, plus yellow flower centers
11. A bit of blue in the shadows
12. Done!

Day 175: Summer tree drawing process (photos) 💛
Here are some step-by-step photos of the summer tree from one of my previous videos. In this drawing I was trying to capture the unusual shape of this particular tree and its colors — there are quite a lot of warm yellow tones in the leaves 💛

The main steps:
1. Sketch the overall shape
At this stage, you can imagine what larger shape the top of the tree could fit into. This one is tall and vertically stretched, but still quite wide.

2. Add small details to the silhouette
I added small branches and leaves around the edges to make the silhouette more natural and interesting.

3. Break up the large shape
I started dividing the tree into smaller areas and used a darker green shade to mark the parts that are less lit.

4. Draw the trunk and branches
I started with a medium brown shade and drew the main form first, just like I did with the tree. Then I added darker shadows and lighter tones.

5. Add shadows and light details
For the shadows, I used two darker shades: one greener shade and one slightly darker, bluish shade. The darkest one works well for adding a few small accents in the deepest shadow areas. For the light details, I used two of the lightest shades. I started with the slightly darker one, and then added a few of the lightest leaves on top.

6. Add some grass
I added a bit of grass around the tree using three shades: yellow, light green, and medium green. At this stage, you can also look at the whole drawing and add a few more light or dark details where needed.

7. Done!

Day 174: Fluffy summer spruce tree in acrylic markers 💛
Happy first day of summer!! I’m still practicing drawing trees, so here’s my step-by-step spruce tree drawing video. This process turned out a bit messier than the previous ones, but I can definitely say that spruce trees are some of my favorite trees to draw. I love their fluffy branches so much! 🌲
