4/27/2026 Italy Trip Part 1: The Colosseum
My dad was right.
He always tells me that before traveling somewhere, I should learn about its history and culture.
I never really listened because, honestly, history was always my least favorite subject. I thought it was boring.
But this trip was different.
Before coming to Italy, I borrowed a book about Julius Caesar from the library. I didn't get very far, and I ended up watching YouTube videos instead. Somehow, learning about ancient Rome made me even more excited to be here.
Standing in front of the Colosseum felt different because I knew a little about the stories behind it, It wasn't just another famous tourist spot. It made me wonder how many people had stood in the exact same place thousands of years ago.
My dad was right after all. The more you know about a place before you visit, the more meaningful it becomes. Little did I know that this day would be the beginning of a trip that would change me in ways I never expected.
The next few days would bring unexpected moments, emotions, lessons, and experiences that I would carry with me long after leaving Italy. #italy #travel #diary #story #nayatravels by @bynayako

3/13/2026 Salt in my hair, sun on my skin

I‘ve been thinking about this day a lot.

Lately, my life has been nonstop between classes, research, and my internship. I didn’t realize how much I needed a place like this until I got here.

I‘ve never been to a beach this quiet before. Growing up, the beaches I knew were always crowded with tourists, so Vieques felt completely different. It was just the ocean, the warm sun, and horses casually walking around like they belonged there.

I remember standing under the outdoor shower, letting my bathing suit dry, with the ocean right behind me. For once, I wasn’t thinking about deadlines or what I had to do next. I was just there, taking in the moment.

Maybe I need to slow down more often. Maybe I need to remember to actually live in the moments I‘m in.
