For my graduation project, I’ve been exploring the relationship between Indonesian heritage textiles, movement, and nightlife culture.

Textiles such as ikat and batik carry stories of identity, craftsmanship, community, and tradition. What interested me was how these textiles could exist within contemporary Western spaces without losing that sense of meaning.

While researching ikat weaving, I became fascinated by the repetitive nature of the process. The same repetition and focus that exists in weaving felt surprisingly close to what happens on a dance floor : people moving together, getting lost in sound, and sharing a collective experience.

Through film, textile, and an original soundtrack that moves from gamelan-inspired sounds into hypnotic dub techno, GERAK explores how heritage can continue to evolve, creating new ways of connecting with culture, identity, and one another.
