God works in mysterious ways.

If anyone asked me before last week why I chose to go into fashion and design my response would be something like "to make ends meet" or I wasn't sure what to do so I did that but it really just dawned on me that it has always been fashion and design all along, I didn't just know at the time.

I remember being fond of making books as a child, it was a tiny book made from folding sheets of my exercise book leaves and holding it with a broom after which I'd imagine an outfit and draw it, I was pretty artsy too, I have a handwriting that got me compliments all the time so I naturally just fell in love with calligraphy and designing as a pastime.

I outgrew that phase and fell in love with writing, then my new passion became building my vocabulary by looking for cool new words in the dictionary so I can put it in my stories and have people intrigued by it so they go through the dictionary to check for its meaning, I was determined for anyone who came across my writings to feel something, just like I felt every time I read a novel myself.

Then came uni, I chose to dramatic arts in order to continue to be a writer, a scriptwriter this time but go the shock of my life when I discovered I suddenly didn't like fictions anymore, I had suddenly grown tired because adulthood hit me hard.

Somewhere along the line my ex asked me if I'd be interested in learning a skill because honestly at that point I was unsure of what the future had in store, I just knew that I was in school and winging it. I thought of hair styling and gave up the thought because I tried it in DRA307 and my lecturer told me "don't bother" (inside joke for the ones who get it lmao)

What are the odds that one hot afternoon I went to this woman's shop at new market and asked her if I could learn to sew. Learning to sew was God's way to heal me, I was going through such a dark time and wanted to kms at some point but 12yo Toke said to hold on for dear life, and I listened.
I didn't know at the time that I was returning to my first love but it's starting to add up.

An Ode to Those Who Carry too Much.

To those who move through life with their shoulders slightly raised, as though the next disappointment has already been scheduled.

To those who learned, somewhere along the way, that love arrives with conditions, that kindness has an expiry date, that every beautiful thing eventually asks for repayment.

I know.

You did not wake up one morning and decide to distrust the world.

Life taught you.

One betrayal at a time.
One grief at a time.
One unanswered prayer.
One broken promise.
One goodbye that came too soon.

Until caution became your native language.

You inspect joy before accepting it.
You rehearse loss before allowing yourself to love.
You brace for impact even when no one is running toward you.

And perhaps it kept you alive.

But dear heart,

what once protected you may now be preventing you from living.

Not everyone is the hand that let go.

Not every silence is rejection.

Not every delay is abandonment.

Not every smile conceals an agenda.

The tragedy of pain is not only that it hurts us—it quietly convinces us that hurt is all there is to expect. It lends us a pair of spectacles through which every stranger resembles an old wound.

And if you spend your days searching for reasons to distrust the world, the world, obliging as it often is, will offer you enough evidence to keep believing you are right.

But what if, just once, you searched for tenderness with the same determination?

What if you expected dignity?

What if you allowed yourself to believe that goodness had not gone extinct?

Not because people cannot disappoint you again.

They can.

They will.

But because your life deserves more than being governed by ghosts.

There is a version of you that laughs without first checking whether it’s safe.

There is a version of you that greets tomorrow without dragging yesterday behind it.

There is a version of you that still notices miracles, not because life became easier, but because your eyes became gentler.

Become acquainted with that version.

Before this year wraps up, I wanted to share two of my favorite stylings, both designed and styled by me, for @tokyobooming .

This year has been a journey of experimenting, learning, and defining what TKYBM really feels like, raw, intentional, and evolving.

Safe to say this was the foundation year that lays the groundwork for the years to come, for the five posts I’ve managed to put up here best believe there’s twenty more that never got the chance to make it this far, but I’m certain moments like this is equally crucial, a seed has to die before it can become a tree yes?

I’ll be honest I got feedbacks that made my heart sink more times than I could count, I put aside sewing for weeks sometimes months because I was used to getting positive feedbacks, imposter syndrome sneaked in and I started to feel like maybe I was just lucky, there was nothing special about my craft. Sigh!

Quitting felt like dying, and I promise I’m not about to kms so I returned to my first love; sewing for the joy of sewing - sewing for myself, I looked high and low for books on systems and structures and I consumed them ferociously, I still am.

Notes have been meticulously taken, and significant changes have been effected. From next year, these new frameworks will be fully operational. 📈

From next year, I’ll be styling other people as well, not that I don’t already do but I’ll be more loud about it (oh this is being loud already lol, I’m a stylist too, hire meee🗣️🗣️) But for now, this is me, the mannequin, the mood board, and the muse.

It’s only November though, there’s plenty of time so I’ll definitely still see you around, but before you go, which look is your favorite? by @byomotoke
