My wife always wanted a dog when we were in the early years of dating. She always talked about her childhood Rottweiler, Lucky, when we first started dating.

I’ve never felt like a great “gift giver,” mostly because she’s so damn good at it. She always outshines my gifting.

I remember searching for a Rottweiler puppy to give to Erika for Christmas. I saw one on Facebook Marketplace. Something told me that was the one. So much that I borrowed $500 from my parents to get her.

On a whim. Many of the best stages of our family have been on a whim. So, it was fitting.

At the time, it was a super impulsive decision. I was more hell-bent on getting Erika a gift she would love than anything. Intentions be damned, things have a way of working out far differently than we ever imagined.

13 years later, as we say goodbye to Mabas, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

This dog was the most perfect mess of us you could have ever imagined.

Slept with pillows and blankets. Side-eyed us at every turn. The ultimate princess. But also the ultimate friend and protector ever of our children and our home.

She was everything good about Erika. A fighter down to the very end. Only going out on her own terms.

Erika might be the best gift-giver in our marriage. But if the last 13 years have proven anything, I gave the best gift of all time. I just wanted to win the gift race once, and I lucked into winning it forever.

It’s silly to talk to a dog, right?

Whatever.

Mabas, thank you for being the never-ending light in our lives. Our children grew up with you. We, too, were still very much children in our early 20s, growing up with you. None of it mattered to you as long as you were with us.

Top Tier Las Vegas turns one tomorrow.

A year ago, I was sitting in the Legacy Club at Circa with the Top Tier leaders, envisioning something better for baseball players in Southern Nevada, inspired by my Chicago roots.

Today, I’m working through our first winter program —a true offseason program with a Chicago influence, supported by a robust, talented coaching staff —working together to create something special and open doors and provide opportunities for players and families all over Southern Nevada (and beyond).

We’re nowhere near done, but we’ve made some truly incredible strides in the last year.

This post is really to thank everyone who helped me turn that vision into a living, breathing reality. All of the players, parents, and coaches; all of the families; the support staff at HQ, and most importantly, my family—none of this happens without their support.

Cheers to one year, and here’s to what’s to come!
