Finally made it out for a shed hunting trip this year! We found lion tracks, deer sheds and elk sheds! Did a quick Easter overnight trip. Did a lot of miles for a single chalk 2 point that was too far gone to bring off the mountain. Grilled up some elk back straps and Texas Roadhouse rolls for dinner. Several lizards for me to play with and several rabbits for Copper to play with. Copper, Kenai, and Reggie all needed a good hike with the cooler weather. 5.5 miles to the Ogden overlook at snow basin. This was Copper’s biggest hike since his surgery, which the results came back as a Low grade sarcoma and the surgery should have removed all the cancer. by @byronpollitz

Had a very eventful weekend setting up trail cameras. We started the morning with copper treeing his first bears, a mama and her cub. We had to climb over so much deadfall that on our way back coppers back legs were jelly and he just couldn’t keep going. I was in and out of phone service but was able to get a call out to my mom and let her know what the situation was. We hung up and I was only able to go another couple hundred yards before copper said he was done for the night. I was prepared to spend the night on the mountain but only had one bottle of water left. We had made it to a clearing on a steep hill that I had service so I dug the hill out into a flat spot to sleep in and after sending multiple texts to my mom and sister the decision was made to call search and rescue. They didn’t get to us until midnight and once they got to me even they didn’t know how we would get him out with all the dead fall as the sled they brought wasn’t going to be useable. Copper was curled up in the bushes so they couldn’t see how big he really is but one of the rescuers suggested we try to get him in my pack. We put all of my stuff in their packs and convinced copper to climb in my pack, that’s when they realized he’s a BIG hound. He was a little panicked as we stood up but with me taking the first turn and soothing him he quickly settled in for the ride. Luckily they had a key to the closed road gate so we only needed to go 1/2 mile but it was 500 feet elevation gain over all the deadfall. We made it to the top at 1:47 am where copper was very happy to get out of the backpack. He is stiff and sore today but still wanted his evening walk after driving home. by @byronpollitz

Last weekend we went for overnight trip and found this dead head along with a broken piece of antler, had to leave it there until we got permission to take it. This week I talked to the DNR officer and got the ok. Headed back for a day trip this weekend to grab it and stumbled onto another small one on our way to it. Also bumped a small rag horn bull still holding onto his antlers. The last video is what happens when you run in to grab a burger but don’t take your dogs order! by @byronpollitz

Last weekends hike, I couldn’t get the truck to where I originally planned. But that made me pick a different route to get to my goal area. Found 3 old antlers, one of them good enough to bring home. On the drive home found a couple different groups of wild horses. by @byronpollitz

Last weekend copper and I did our yearly living room hike. He is now 12! We both took it a bit slower this last year so we are going to need to make up for it in 2026! by @byronpollitz

Over the Christmas break, one of the days I wasn’t hunting I got to hang out with my niece Lexi. We went shooting, and then we also went for her first 4 wheeler ride and obviously her first time driving the 4 wheeler. by @byronpollitz

Took a couple weeks off work to hunt cow elk with my nephew Cardon. We hunted 10 out of 14 days doing close to 50 miles. With the low amount of snow we’ve had the elk haven’t been easy to find. We finally found elk on day 8 but they were 5 miles away. We hiked to them the following day and got about half a mile from them when another hunter on a snowmobile beat us to them and took a shot scaring them off. That was an 11.5 mile day for us just to have our hearts broken lol. We went out again but just could not relocate them. Overall though any day on the mountain is a good day and spending it with my nephew for his first elk hunt made it even better. The hunt goes until the end of January so I will keep after it but cardon has gone back home so it might need to be next season before he gets another chance. by @byronpollitz
