King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem and Salah ad-Din stood on opposite sides of one of history’s fiercest conflicts. Despite suffering from leprosy, the young Baldwin became a determined ruler and famously defeated Salah ad-Din at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177.

Their relationship was not exactly a friendship, but a rivalry shaped by war, truces, and political necessity. Years after Baldwin’s death, Salah ad-Din recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. By the end of the Third Crusade, Christian pilgrims were once again allowed safe access to the holy city.
