Woke up like this

Inspired by Solange’s When I Get Home, an album steeped in belonging, heritage, and a soundscape so sensorial it moves every listener to their core. The interpretation for this shoot
draws from @szilvesztermako use of confined, stark spaces. In a world that demands everything from women, where is the respite? When do we truly get home?

Omission: no jewellery, no shoes. Yet the performance is still demanded. The shine, still expected. Darkness or brightness, never wholly one or the other. Sampha’s haunting backing vocals echo this tension, especially in Time (is), where layers of unspoken depth linger just beyond language. The album is as complicated, layered, and uncompromising as the work it inspired.

This shoot explores the idea of “I woke up like this”. A phrase that has become both celebration and burden. It challenges the double standard that expects women to appear effortlessly polished, even within spaces meant for softness and rest. It imagines home not as comfort, but as a stage, a place where intimacy is stripped away, and the woman is left to perform, ornamented even in her supposed vulnerability.

‘A kì í mò í wè kì a káyé já’

translates roughly to No matter one’s expertise in swimming, no one can swim through the universe

Yoruba proverb, as explained by Gbenga Fasiku, Department of Philosophy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ilé-Ifè. To shed further light on this the song encapsulating will be home by Kokoroko. A sing that literally translates to ‘Get up, we are nearly home’. And truthfully every image and expression of our art by using our strong Nigerian heritage as a medium for communication proves to us we are nearly home. The universe is our home. No matter how much we swim we cannot do this alone.
