• Add light percussion
• Add acoustic guitar texture

This is the final summary of the whole process.

I enjoy these projects where the goal is not only to reproduce a song, but to understand why it works, find the right sounds and voicings, and build it again with care.

Adding warmth and depth with organic guitars. 🎸✨

Once the low end and groove are set, it’s time to paint the track.

Instead of cluttering the mix with heavy synth layers, I wanted organic textures that breathe.

Brought in my new Jose Torres acoustic to lay down warm rhythm chords, then added clean Stratocaster accents and ambient pads to give the arrangement space and movement.

Every layer serves a purpose: respecting Carole King’s original melody while giving it a modern Neo-Soul aesthetic.

Laid down the drum pattern on keys to lock in that subtle R&B swing, then picked up the bass to glue it together, focusing on those iconic rhythmic hits from Carole King’s original arrangement.

Re-imagining Carole King for a modern client project. 🎹✨
When a client asks for a backing track based on a classic like ‘It’s Too Late’, the goal isn’t just to copy the original. It’s about understanding the core of the song, the structure, the voicings, the narrative, and translating it into a modern sonic landscape.

They gave me total creative freedom, so I took it straight into my home turf: Neo-Soul.

Step 1:
Deconstructed the original 103 BPM arrangement alongside a raw piano reference.

Step 2:
Dropped the tempo to 98 BPM to give the groove room to breathe, and laid down the new foundation starting with an Am9.

This is part 1 of a 4-part series documenting the entire production process from concept to stem delivery.
