Every app on your phone decides what you see. This one genuinely doesn't, and it's free with no account.

NetNewsWire. You add the sites you actually care about — news outlets, blogs, specific writers, even YouTube channels — and it puts everything they publish into one list, in order. No ranking. No engagement weighting. No recommendation engine deciding you'd probably enjoy something from an account you've never heard of.

Here's the bit that genuinely felt strange the first time: the feed ends. You get to the bottom, you've read everything, and there's nothing more. Almost nothing on a phone is willing to just stop.

Setup is two steps. Paste a site address. Do it again. Most sites still publish a feed even though nobody advertises it anymore, and the app usually finds it from the normal homepage URL. Syncs to your Mac and iPad over iCloud.

And the free part is a real free. No ads. No in-app purchase. No premium tier, no subscription, no trial, and no account to create — you just open it. No tracking scripts either, and since it's open source you can check that rather than believe it.

Yes, this is RSS. Twenty-five-year-old tech that never died — it just stopped being worth promoting, because a feed you completely control is nearly impossible to sell ads against. Which is exactly why it's good now.

How much of what you saw on your phone today did you actually choose?

The first thing ever sold on eBay was broken, and the guy who bought it knew that going in.

1. Pierre Omidyar spends Labor Day weekend building an auction site in his living room. It's called AuctionWeb at this point, it's a side project, and like anyone testing a new build he needs a dummy listing. So he lists a laser pointer that doesn't work.

He wasn't selling it. He was checking whether the code worked.

It sold. $14.83.

And this is the part I love — he emailed the buyer to make sure there'd been no misunderstanding. Listing says broken. Item is broken. You good? The reply, in Pierre's telling: "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers."

That one email is basically eBay's entire business model proven on day one. Not a shop. A place where the weirdly specific person and the weirdly specific object can actually find each other. Before eBay those two never meet. After eBay it took a weekend.

The ending is better than the story deserves. Nobody knew who the buyer was for twenty years. Then in 2015, for eBay's 20th birthday, a Canadian named Mark Fraser came forward, appeared in a video shown at the company's seller summit, and held up the original laser pointer. He'd kept it the whole time. His own version is a little less romantic — he says he was an electronics guy who thought he could fix it — but he never did.

Still broken. Twenty years later.

What's the most useless thing you've ever genuinely wanted to buy?

Nokia genuinely expected you to hold a phone against your face like a taco — and they had a reason.

The N-Gage came out in October 2003 for $299. Phone on one side, games console on the other. And because the front was all screen and buttons, the earpiece got pushed onto the top edge of the device.

Here's the bit that gets me: the logic actually holds up. Nokia figured that if you're deep in a game and someone calls, you shouldn't have to smash the whole screen into your cheek to answer. Moving the speaker to the edge solves that. It's a real solution to a real problem.

It also made every owner look ridiculous in public, which turned out to matter more than the engineering.

People started calling it "sidetalking." Somebody built an entire website just to host photos of people holding things sideways to their heads. Reviewers compared it to a taco, a meat pie, a one-eared Mickey Mouse. The meme outran the marketing budget completely.

And the flaw everybody forgot is somehow worse — game cards lived under the battery. Want to play something else? Back cover off, battery out, swap the card, put it back together, reboot. Every time.

Nokia wanted six million sold in year one. Four years later they were at three.

The frustrating part is they were right about the future. 3D mobile gaming, wireless multiplayer, online play — all of it showed up again in the DS, the PSP, and every phone you've owned since. They just built it into the wrong shape.

Did you own one of these, or know the one kid at school who did?

Stop screenshotting videos to get a photo out of them. iOS 27 finally killed that whole ritual.

You know the routine. Pause the video. Wait for the playback controls to disappear. Hit the screenshot buttons. Get the moment half a second too late. Try again. Crop it. Settle for something soft and slightly wrong.

In iOS 27 you open the video, land on the frame you want, tap the three dots in the top right, and pick Save Video Frame as Photo. Done. It's in your library.

Here's why it's actually better and not just faster. A screenshot captures your screen — your screen's resolution, your screen's aspect ratio, and any buttons that hadn't faded yet. This pulls the frame straight out of the video file. Native resolution, full frame, no interface, nothing to crop.

The funny part is the iPhone has been able to grab stills while you're recording for years. It just couldn't do it for videos you'd already saved. That's the gap that finally got closed.

Timing: it's in the public beta right now and the general release is expected in September, so it's weeks away if you don't run betas. Works on iPad and Mac too.

It's a small feature. It fixes something almost everyone has been doing the hard way for years.

Be honest — how many blurry screenshots of videos are in your camera roll right now?

Blackmagic sells cinema cameras for two grand and gives this app away for nothing. No subscription, no in-app purchase, nothing.

Both halves of that split screen are the same iPhone. Left is the stock camera app, right is Blackmagic Camera. Same phone, same light, same subject.

The difference isn't magic, it's control. The stock camera app makes every decision for you — exposure, shutter, white balance — and it keeps re-making them while you're filming. That's brilliant for snapping your dinner and terrible for anything you actually planned. If you've ever filmed near a window and watched the whole image pulse as it hunts for exposure, you know exactly what I mean.

Blackmagic gives all of that back. Shutter angle, ISO, white balance in kelvin, frame rate, manual focus. Laid out like a real camera because it's the same interface as their actual cameras. You can shoot 10-bit ProRes, and on iPhone 15 Pro and up you get proper Apple Log for grading.

So why free? Because Blackmagic doesn't sell apps, they sell cameras and DaVinci Resolve. Every person who starts shooting properly on a phone is a future Resolve user. The app is the front door, not the product.

Two things before you go all in — Log needs a 15 Pro or newer, and ProRes files will eat your storage alive. Shoot to an SSD or keep it short.

Still the best free download on the App Store if you film anything at all.

What's the last free app you downloaded that actually turned out to be good?

iOS 26 just let you do something to your alarm that should have existed 15 years ago. ⏰

The 9-minute snooze is finally gone.

For every iPhone, every iOS version — it was always 9 minutes. You couldn't change it. Apple inherited the number from old mechanical clocks that couldn't physically do 10 minutes, and just kept it there for a decade and a half.

iOS 26 fixes this. Custom snooze duration. Set it to whatever actually helps you wake up.

How to do it: Clock app → tap your alarm → Edit → scroll to Snooze → set your duration.

30 seconds. Done.

What's your ideal snooze length? 👇

Apps are charging you $10/month for rain sounds.

Your iPhone has had this built in since iOS 15.

It's called Background Sounds. Buried in Accessibility settings. Six options: Rain, Stream, Ocean, White Noise, Balanced Noise, Bright Noise. They play under your music. Under your podcasts. With the screen locked.

Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Background Sounds

Add the Hearing icon to your Control Center so you can switch sounds in one tap going forward.

Free. Forever. Cancel whatever subscription you were about to buy.

What's your go-to background sound? ⬇️

AirDrop only works on Apple devices. And in 2026, sending a file from your iPhone to a Windows PC is somehow still a nightmare. 🙄

LocalSend fixes that completely.

Free app — iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows. Sends files between any two devices instantly over WiFi. No internet. No Bluetooth. No cables.

No account. No upload limit. No subscription. Nothing to configure.

I just sent a large video from my iPhone to my Windows PC in under 10 seconds.

Basically AirDrop — but for every device on the planet. 📲

Install it on all your devices. You're very welcome. 🫡

Save this so you don't forget the name.

he $15B company that started as a mistake nobody wanted.
Discord started as a video game. A dead one. 🎮

While the game was failing, players kept coming back for one thing — the voice chat. Because in 2015, gaming comms were a disaster. Skype froze. TeamSpeak crashed. Ventrilo looked like it was built in 1943.

So the founders did the unthinkable: killed their own game on purpose. And bet everything on the voice chat feature nobody thought mattered.

That "side feature" is now a $15 billion platform.

The lesson? Sometimes your side feature IS the product. You just haven't noticed yet. 💡

Save this if you're building something right now.

Stop opening the Clock app — your iPhone can set a timer way faster than that. ⏱️

Here's the hidden Control Center shortcut most people never find:

1. Open Control Center
2. Long-press an empty space → tap Add a Control
3. Search "Timer" and add it
4. Long-press the new Timer button
5. Drag the slider to your time (1 min up to 2 hours)
6. Tap Start

No app, no menus — just drag and go.

Save this for the next nap, workout, or pasta night you don't want to overcook. 🍝

This app is for anyone who writes to-do lists… then forgets they exist.

The app is called **Structured**, and it turns your normal task list into a visual daily timeline.

Instead of seeing a random list of things you need to do, you can see your whole day hour by hour. That makes it much easier to understand where your time is going and what you should focus on next.

It is especially useful if your day feels chaotic, messy, or hard to organize.

With Structured, you can:

- Plan your day visually
- Move tasks around by dragging them
- Add colors and icons
- Add notes and subtasks
- Set reminders
- Organize your schedule hour by hour
- Make your to-do list feel less overwhelming

The app works well because it makes planning feel visual.

A normal checklist can be useful, but sometimes it just becomes a pile of tasks. Structured makes your day feel more like a clean timeline, so you can actually see when each task fits.

It is great for students, freelancers, creators, remote workers, busy schedules, and anyone who wants a simple daily planner app without overcomplicating everything.

And the free version is actually useful, which makes it a strong App Store Gem to try.

Use it for studying, work blocks, content planning, gym time, breaks, errands, routines, or anything you want to organize visually.

Save this if you want to try Structured later.

Share it with someone who always ignores their to-do list.

Comment if you prefer visual planners or simple checklists.
