“You can’t plan your career. You can prepare.”

David didn’t expect a Boeing interview when he was 18 would lead him to a career emphasis on radar. But it did!

“Opportunities will present themselves.”

Have you ever asked, “who am I?”

During New Student Orientation, Kirby Heyborne recounted his experience wrestling with this question during the early days of his acting career.

Here are some thoughts that Kirby shared:

“God has already drafted the blueprint of your eternal worth.”

“When you feel alone, kneel down and ask God what He thinks of you. And I promise you, you will feel like you’re enough.”

With the new semester in full swing, you may have moments when you question “who am I?” Just remember, you are enough.

Calling all BYU engineers 🛠️ Giving Cougsday is here!

Whether they’re surveying fields, building rovers, or working on job sites, our students are shaping the future, and student aid can help make it possible. Right now, our five departments are competing for $30,000 in that aid, and the top three are decided by how many people give, not how much. Any amount counts!

Give by Wednesday at 11:59 PM #givingcougsday

Just taking a quick look back at Chip Camp 2026! 🚀

Students got hands-on experience with real engineering:
- Building and launching rockets
- Building an integrated circuit
- Programming an Arduino vehicle
- Designing a flying disk
- And more!

Chip Camp gives students the chance to do what scientists and engineers do every day, not just hear about it.

Carrying hard things together, one day at a time.

As the semester kicks into gear, Kirby Heybourne encourages us to look around for opportunities to support others as they take on their own “hives of bees.”

Rachel Lattin, a Construction Management major from Logan, Utah, has been looking forward to attending BYU since she was little, eating ice cream at the creamery.

Through challenges of adjusting to college life and picking her major, she has found joy in the growth she’s experienced as she prepares to design buildings after graduation.

“From my time at BYU, I recognize that God is in everything,” Rachel says. “He’s in the science. He’s in the art. He’s everywhere. I think that in being a reflection of that light, you approach your professional life differently.” by @byuengineering

Have you ever felt like you just keep getting stung, no matter what you do?

When it is hard to keep trying, Kirby Heybourne reminds us that showing up in faith, we can get through anything.

Watch the full lecture where Kirby shares the story of a hike, bee stings, some questionable glasses, and the power of perseverance and service at the link in our bio. by @byuengineering

We all need a friend like Justin!

Kirby Heybourne helped kickstart the semester with a lecture to our newest students. He shared an experience that taught him a valuable lesson about friendship and service. Follow along to see how a hike, a bee attack, and a pair of “indestructible” glasses can apply to your engineering education.

Now that the semester is underway, let’s hear a bit more advice/encouragement from Jack, a current mechanical engineering student!

“Incoming freshman! Don’t get discouraged! In your first few semesters as an engineering student, you will undoubtedly have a bad test or a rough class and in that moment, it’s very easy to tell yourself or justify that you can’t be an engineer. Don’t fall for it!

I am a firm believer that anyone can be an engineer! If you choose to stick with it, you will meet lifelong friends, fantastic professors and mentors, and you could even build a race car (join BYU Racing!). Welcome to BYU!” by @byuengineering
